Musée du Louvre - Escalier Mollien

The Mollien staircase

For anyone who has ventured into the Louvre, the size of this museum is staggering.  This staircase situated in the center of the Pavillon Mollien was built by the architect Hector Lefuel and inaugurated on August 14, 1857, along with the other buildings comprising Napoleon III's Nouveau Louvre.

On my first trip to Paris this ironwork was a subject of sketches
as I tried to take in all the architecture Paris could deliver.
Much of my time in Paris now is spent behind a camera lens,
but I plan to sketch again on my next trip,
taking the views and details at a slower pace.

The knowledge one needs to fully appreciate all that Paris has to offer is staggering. I've seen this staircase but never really looked at it. Thanks for making me look and see it.

You're right -- the Louvre is a week-long excursion, maybe more! But any part you see is worth it.

Looking forward to your sharing sketches.

I need to go back there, I missed so much on the last visit. Have a good day. Diane

Fine details, Genie. Sketching instead of photographing will definitely slow the pace. There is much to be said for that, but also a lot lost. Choices!

Lucky you to have the option—and I'd love to see your sketches too.

And how many weeks will you be spending in the Louvre? (and still not see it all)

ah ! so you are not only a photographer !
the size of the Louvre to me is totally overwhelming (and a bit frustrating)

Oh, I know. Sketching slows the pace, but photos capture so much, so much! What to do? Best, Rita

How wonderful that you can sketch as well, I'm hopeless at such things, and need my camera to see for me. I'm glad that you can enjoy the sketching. The Louvre is certainly beautiful, and huge, I took many, many photos of architectural details.

I just found you from searching for the name of the designer of the staircase. I took about 50 photos of it. Just got back Saturday from almost three weeks in Paris. Took 2800 photos. Saw some smaller museums we hadn't been to on trips before that we just loved. As nice as trips to Paris are, you also have to deal with the pickpockets. Both my husband and I got robbed. American tourists just stand out too much to the professional theives. Back to sorting photos . . .
