Georges Brassens

Georges Brassens
singer-songwriter, poet

b. 22 October 1921
d. 29 October 1981

Last November (2011) I walked with Peter (Peter's Paris) along a small alley,
Impasse Florimont, where Brassens  originally sought to hide
while on leave from a German labor camp.
He did not return to the camp and lived here from 1944 to 1966
with the owners Jeanne and Marcel Planche.

As we approached the door of 9, Impasse Florimont,
I took a photo of the fading rose and poignant note.
You see, it was just a few days after the 30th anniversary of Brassen's death.
It speaks of the sadness of the years since his passing to "a paradise of musicians."

Vous me manquez
I miss you

Église Saint-Vincent-de-Paul de Paris II

Église Saint-Vincent-de-Paul de Paris

Last Sunday I promised to bring you inside
for a glimpse of the intricate details of this magnificent church.
On the right you can see a portion of the painted frieze around the nave
of 160 male and female saints advancing towards the sanctuary,
painted by (Hippolyte Flandrin, 1848-53)

This photo is taken from the apse behind the main altar
and looking back toward the grand organ and the entrance of the church.
There is more to come...

In the second week of October
a Sunday full of blue skies and sunshine
attracts the masses to this beautiful garden

which was first opened to the public in 1667,

Jardin des Tuileries - Tigre terrasant un crocodile

Tigre terrasant un crocodile
Auguste Cain (1873)

(Tiger overwhelming a crocodile)
Overwhelming?  I would say that he is going to "eat" the crocodile!
This is perhaps my favorite of the bronze animal statues in the park.
I love the powerful image in bronze.

Café le Depart Saint-Michel

Café le Depart Saint-Michel

The view above the awning has more of interest
than the tourists at street level.

The red awning, neon sign, fresh flower boxes,
and the building's architecture
have compelled me to photograph this façade every season.

Église Saint-Vincent-de-Paul de Paris

Église Saint-Vincent-de-Paul de Paris

The impressive façade of this church sits atop a hill in the 10ème arrondissement
with a broad entrance at Place Franz-Liszt.
Completed in 1844 by Jacques Hittorff, there are a series of ramps
which were originally designed to aid access by horse-drawn carriages.
Today, there are a series of gardens leading up to the front steps.

Seen above the portico is a pediment sculpted by Charles-François Leboeuf-Nanteuil
on the glorification of Saint Vincent-de-Paul.
He is seen surrounded by figures symbolizing his saintly actions.

We arrived just as the doors were closing at noon and so we left to return later,
just as I will bring you back here soon
to see the inside of this large church and the treasures it holds.

Le Moulin de la Vierge II

Le Moulin de la Vierge

This boulangerie sits in a wasteland of drab buildings in the 14ème,
a single jewel rescued from the wrecking ball.

It has tile walls
a wood-fired oven
murals of women carrying armfuls of wheat
etched glass doors
delicious breads, and...

You may remember our friend Chula...

Chula Wula D'Auge, a Sheltie by birth and a Frenchie by choice, landed at Charles de Gaulle Airport after an 11-hour flight on Air France from San Francisco.  Chula, the author of Dog Trots Globe - To Paris & Provence, packed light with only a fur coast and four white socks.  She plans a 2-month adventure mostly in Provence on this, her third visit to France.

On my sidebar you can follow Chula's adventures and share her Poochcards from Provence about twice a week.  Visit her for a dog's-eye view of Provence and a lot of fun.

I am often surprised to see English names on Paris businesses,
particularly when it would be more enticing written in French.

Église Saint-Augustin

Église Saint-Augustin

Designed and built by the French architect Louis Baltard
between 1860 and 1871 this church sits almost on its own island
centered at the crossroads of major boulevards in the 8ème Arrondissement.
Baltard was involved with the restoration of several Parisian churches
including Saint Germain l'Auxerrois, St. Eustache, Saint-Germain des Pres,
and Saint-Séverin.

He is probably best known for building the twelve pavilions of Les Halles,
the former central market in Paris.

This is a unique church in Paris with its shiny white marble walls
and a glass partition separating it from the dome area
which can be seen on the Paris city-scape.

Although it sits on a major tourist site,
most have not seen nor even heard of this beautiful church.
