Carrousel VI -- Place Prosper Goubaux

Rain mixed with snow did not dampen the enthusiasm for riding this carrousel, found in the 17ième arrondissement, next to Métro Villiers... The children were with parents and grandparents on this Saturday afternoon.

I do not have a name for this carrousel, but with the help of some friends I have begun to notice the rotation of the merry-go-rounds. This one is counter-clockwise and you can take a look at the others I have featured: here, here, here, here, and here. It is said that the German mechanisms, often found in the Paris carrousels, were patented to run counter-clockwise while those in the United States usually rotate clockwise. The jury is still out on this... more research to come.

I like this, all the more because at one point Villier was my old metro stop....nostalgia. I remember a merry-go-round from my childhood in Pa. that did go counter-clockwise.

We don't mind so much about them, but if we begin to think of it, to make a merry-go-round work is not an easy thing!

Nice photo Genie. In Canada it's too cold (-4 Celsius today)to have outdoor attractions. The next time I see a carrousel I will be checking the direction of the rotation.

Who on earth would ever notice the roatation? Well maybe all of those people that don't have a camera stuck in their face trying to capture some detail of the carrousel like moi!! :)

Fun facts, traveling back in time - perhaps this is why we only see children riding the carousel.

Delightful picture, Genie.

Carousels in Canada with which I'm familiar also run counter-clockwise.

Bibi -- Well, you had a very nice neighborhood... we usually end up here at some point during each trip to Paris walking to/from Parc de Monceau

Malyss -- You are right... I think that the engineering is quite a bit more than a couple of gears and a motor.

Andy -- Tant pis... when you do find the carousels, please report back on rotation... research, love it!

Leia -- I do also and I have some interesting photos with blurred lights

Virginia -- It's all about the details, my dear... kinda like reading a map - hehehe

Rob -- I have seen teenagers riding and adults with small children... sometimes I think that those adults are just looking for an excuse to take a turn or two!

That's quite an impressive collection of carrousels you have there, Genie! I can think of several carrousels here in the US that run counter-clockwise—now I'm going to think about that every time I see one.

Another gorgeous carousel. I love them.

I've ridden a few carousels in Paris and none of them moved counter-clock-wise.

Hey, I used to live nearby, Metro Monceau, facing the 'english nurse's park', as we used to call it. A lifetime ago... Did you ever go to the tiny but amazingly beautiful Russian Orthodox Aleksander Nevski Cathedral, ?

That is a very modern carrousel, with an airplane and spaceship. The ones I see around here are antiques, with horses and carts. When the weather gets warmer, I think I will go back and take more Hartford carrousel photos.

Suzanneberry -- Merci! Thank you for hopping over to see my photos/blog... I am traveling this weekend but send me an email...

Alexa -- Great! You must promise to be my East Coast, Italy, Virginia, Paris carousel scout... I may even feel motivated to write a white paper on the rotation of carousels!

Loree -- Merci, moi aussi!

Starman -- Well, 4 of the 6 carousels I have shown rotate counterclockwise and on one you cannot tell, but I have many more left to check out and photos in my cache to check on some others... let me know if you know of any specific ones and I will check them out

Rob and Mandy -- Oh, I love that park and have been to the side with the nursery school... I have not been to that cathedral but I just put it on my "list" Merci, mes amis!

Jack -- That would be great and be sure to give me a heads-up when you post them, good friend

Alan -- I think that we need to have a day when the adults ride the carousels!

Randy -- Merci, and bon weekend to you!
