They are everywhere you look.  

If you are with children, make a game of finding animals, 

characters, and faces in the architecture with a prize at the end of the day.

The Porch Tower

This 6th century church has seen more than its share of unrest, wars, and destruction.  It was originally the keystone of an important abbey complex founded by King Childebert in the 540s.  He created the Abbaye Saint-Croix-Saint-Vincent (as it was called then) to house two important relics he had brought back from an expedition in Spain.  By the mid-eighth century the abbey had taken on the local saint's name (Germain), with the suffix "des prés" indicating that it was out in the meadows beyond the city limits.  

Although nothing remains of the early 6th century church, this heavily-buttressed porch-tower was built around 1000.  The centuries of architecture and stories could keep a researcher busy for years.

but it is only outside the Peripherique by two stops,

and you can use a Paris Visit, Zones 1-3

However, if you miss the last train back into Paris,

it would seem distant indeed.

One of the boys spent an hour playing in the water puddles 

with hardly a glance given by his maman.

I walk past this building many times daily when I am in Paris.

What caused me to look up and see the sweet face of a cherub this time?

There was not a date on the building that I could see, and on the other end of this transom was another cherub with his back turned to the street and the notation of the engineering company, "Canal et Schuhl"

Last Sunday I featured the exterior of this church with its first construction in the 6th century.  The existing building dates from 1621 with addition of these Gothic vaults in 1667.  The carved keystones in the apex of the arches are of the Mannerist style, dropped slightly from the ceiling and carved to relate a religious scene.

  Based on the church's website and the activity seen in October, the church with foundations in the first century is active and vibrant, serving the parishioners of the 10ème arrondissement.

The final resting place of the famed dancer and choreographer resembles a "traveling trunk" draped with a fringed kilim rug.  The rug is actually crafted with bronze fringe and small glass mosaics, an homage to Nureyev's Bashkir heritage.  Click here to see the close-up details of the rug's artistry in my previous post.

It is worth the short train ride to the southern suburbs (only 14.6 miles from the center of Paris) to see this lovely and unusual cemetery.

I was attracted by the architecture and stone construction of this building 

on a narrow street just off Place des Victoires.  Located at the corner of rue Croix des Petits Champs and rue de la Vrillière, this curious mansion (Hôtel Portalis) was built by the architect Ledais in 1750. Its uniqueness lies in its two turrets mounted on curved carve-outs from the base.  This strange form was intended to save ground floor space and also to soften the corner between the two streets.  I will bring you back here to see more of the building soon. 

Under the turrets at street level, 

the terrace looks like a pleasant place to stop for a glass of wine.

Built on a historical site, this church has been built and rebuilt over the centuries.  In the sixth century this site was the location of a church, monastery and gardens, and has maintained its religious focus.  The basic building seen in the photo dates from 1621 and has seen many individual architectural embellishments in the past 400 years.  Under Napoleon III, a Gothic façade was added by the architect Constant-Dufeux.

I will bring you back for the exquisite details of the interior of this active church.

In a fence row of about 25 feet (7.62 meters) there were 

side-by-side pigeons who had spaced themselves almost perfectly, 

although they could not agree on the direction.

Pigeons are not my preference as photographic subjects, but

the sight of 42 pigeons lined up on a fence was worth a click or two.

In my trips to Paris I had prowled the grounds of Les Invalides but had never explored this national military museum of France.  It was originally built as a hospital and home for disabled soldiers by Louis XIV.  The museum holds 500,000 artifacts and includes weapons, armor, artillery, uniforms, emblems and paintings. 

 The permanent collections are organized chronologically giving a historic tour from antiquity through the end of World War II.  There is considerable focus on Napoleon with less on the role of France during the last world war.

The display of weapons and uniforms over the centuries is fascinating.

Last November (2011) I walked with Peter (Peter's Paris) along a small alley, 

Impasse Florimont, where Brassens  originally sought to hide 

while on leave from a German labor camp.  

He did not return to the camp and lived here from 1944 to 1966 

with the owners Jeanne and Marcel Planche.

As we approached the door of 9, Impasse Florimont, 

I took a photo of the fading rose and poignant note.  

You see, it was just a few days after the 30th anniversary of Brassen's death.  

It speaks of the sadness of the years since his passing to "a paradise of musicians."

Last Sunday I promised to bring you inside 

for a glimpse of the intricate details of this magnificent church.  

On the right you can see a portion of the painted frieze around the nave 

of 160 male and female saints advancing towards the sanctuary, 

painted by (Hippolyte Flandrin, 1848-53)

This photo is taken from the apse behind the main altar 

and looking back toward the grand organ and the entrance of the church.
