City Daily Photo Theme Day - "Abandoned"

Jardin des Tuileries
"Abandoned"

If you are not familiar with this popular and historied Paris garden
the photo above might appear as just a "park photo."
This shot was made on the day after the November 13, 2015
terrorist attacks.

On this beautiful, crisp November Saturday, the
garden was closed, an eerie sight.  On a typical weekend,
you would not see any empty green chairs, and the paths would be
filled with families, children, couples, and people enjoying life.

Jardin des Tuileries - Fermé

Jardin des Tuileries

The gates were closed for a few days
and the emptiness beyond was absolutely eerie.

Jardin des Tuileries

Jardin des Tuileries

It is impossible to visit Paris
without sitting in one of the green chairs around a park fountain.

Sometimes you have to bundle up a bit
if there is a chill in the air.

Rue de Rivoli - la petite

Rue de Rivoli

After a long afternoon at Jardin des Tuileries,
this little one held the hand of her maman
as the family walked  toward home.

City Daily Photo Theme Day - Shelter

Jardin des Tuileries

The shared umbrella was scant shelter
in this October deluge.
The trees provided a bit of shelter
but the downpour drenched us all that day!

The theme for this first day of October is SHELTER.

Brume, brouillard et pluie - Jardin des Tuileries

Jardin des Tuileries

The mist, fog and rain generally appear with a vengeance in November,
but October can have a damp week or two also.

Remember, "a misty, foggy, rainy day in Paris
beats a great day at home"*

Enjoy the moment

Jardin des Tuileries

Jardin des Tuileries

A typical weekend scene at Tuileries:
games from Pétanque to soccer;
sitting in the ubiquitous green chairs around the fountain;
meeting friends for a picnic...

You can see from the big puddles in the foreground
that the rash of intermittent rain showers
does not keep the Parisians away.

la petite et son reflet

Jardin des Tuileries

The early rains left a multitude of puddles in the garden.

Is this precious baby pondering her reflection in the water,
or is she full of mischief and planning to jump with a splash?

Jardin des Tuileries - des parapluies

Jardin des Tuileries

The autumn leaves can be seen down this alley.
The trees, many still green, provide some shelter from the rain.

I do not bring an umbrella to Paris
as I cannot hold an umbrella and my camera at the same time.

I am like a wet dog, but a rainy day in Paris...

Pétanque XXIII

2012 Oct 7 Sunday_22DSC_8978

Pétanque

Jardin des Tuileries

I used to believe that this was only a game in Paris for men of a certain age, but have discovered that it is played by all ages, men and women.  Once you get away from Jardin des Tuileries and Jardin du Luxembourg you will see a greater variety in the players.

Do you see two groups of children?

Jardin des Tuileries - must be a French girl!

Jardin des Tuileries

So perfectly stylish as she left the Tuileries with her parents
...must be a French girl!

No, I do not know this child,
but my French-girl-wannabe and her husband
have just given us a petite bébé
who will have all the bows and ruffles she wants.
We will buy Boules for her athletic side.

This is personal, but I am giddy.

Jardin des Tuileries - les enfants dans le parc

Jardin des Tuileries

A Sunday afternoon finds many children in the parks of Paris.  These two were part of a group of five or six who played a game of soccer with imaginary boundaries.  They were not daunted by the scattering of puddles left by the recent rain.

Jardin des Tuileries - une petite grenouille?

une petite grenouille?

No, but this young fellow was quite comfortable
playing in the rain-filled puddles of Jardin des Tuileries.

The flâneurs and others in the park gave him a wide berth
as there was much water flying.

coa-coa
or should that be ribbette-ribbette?
(ribbit!)

Jardins des Tuileries - XXVII

Jardins des Tuileries

This sumptuous park is the largest in Paris at 63 acres (25.5 hectares)
and provides a grand outdoor entertainment center for Parisians and visitors alike.

Jogging, walking, riding Vélibs, playing pétanque,
sitting in the ubiquitous green chairs by the side of Grand Bassin Octagonal...
The list is endless

Jardin des Tuileries - petite fille

Jardin des Tuileries

This little girl with her long braids has Mickey Mouse lovingly wrapped,
cradled in her arms.  Her chic plaid coat makes me think that...

She must be a French girl, n'est-ce pas?

Pétanque et un parapluie

Jardin des Tuileries

Never daunted by a few drops of rain,
these gentlemen gather daily to play their games of pétanque.

A well-worn parapluie* provides scant protection from the deluge this day.

La Tour Eiffel et la Grande Roue

La Tour Eiffel et la Grande Roue

From this one position, without even turning your head, you can see the Eiffel Tower, the 200-ft tall ferris wheel, the Obélisque de Louxor (75 ft high) in Place de la Concorde, and you can see the flag atop the dome of the Grand Palais.
