Les vitrines de jouets - CDP Theme Day

Looking out of a store window at the winter
landscape, the tin toys resemble paper silhouettes
against a palette of neutrals.

The theme for the City Daily Photo Bloggers
on this first day of March:  A photo that is in color
but appears almost as a black and white shot.

City Daily Photo Theme Day - Ephemeral

Jardin du Luxembourg

The autumn bloom of chrysanthemums are ephemeral
but our memories are imprinted with the many shades of gold and orange.

On the first day of each month, the City Daily Photobloggers
from around the world interpret the "theme" and November's
theme is "EPHEMERAL."  Take a look here.

City Daily Photo - Theme Day - La Revolution

City Daily Photo
Theme Day

On the first day of each month the photographers who participate daily with photos of their city (or adopted city) post a photo along a selected theme.  This month is "revolution," and I chose to consider the revolutions in wheels.

This woman is riding a Velib,
which is the public bicycle system in Paris.

On three trips to Paris I have used the Velibs,
dodging the buses and cars to take a different view of the city.
I do not take photos while I ride which is a great comfort to my family.

Take a look at all of the interpretations of the CDP photographers here.

Les yeux verts - City Daily Photo Theme Day

"the green eyes"

To look at someone with green eyes might imply envy
but to see these eyes today
I feel thankful for the times I have been in Paris
with a promise of many more visits to come.

Anyway, my eyes are blue.

Today I join the City Daily Photo bloggers around the world
in Theme Day, "My Camera-Shy Self Portrait."

City Daily Photo Theme Day: "Aging"

This mature gentleman dined alone
on the café terrace,
enjoyed un café and a smoke,
and then counted out the payment.

He walked with the assistance of a cane,
independent and self-assured.
He is known in the neighborhood,
acknowledging the greetings that came his way.

On the first day of each month the City Daily Photo community
posts a photo.  The theme this month is "aging."

City Daily Photo Theme Day - "Zest!"

"Zest!"

Taken in the window of Galeries Lafayette, this grater would be fine for a citrus zest but not shaped well for larger fruits and vegetables.  I wish that I had bought one for my kitchen wall.

In observance of Theme Day for the City Daily Photo blogs (a different theme on the first day of every month), there is a double entendre with this photo:  First is the obvious function of this grater for making zest; second, my heart beats faster when it sees the Eiffel Tower design... zest!

Pyramide du Louvre - City Daily Photo Theme Day: triangles

Pyramide du Louvre

The first day of the month is Theme Day for the City Daily Photo community, and the theme for April is "triangles."  In Paris there are two obvious and very large architectural structures which would pass the test:  La Tour Eiffel and I M Pei's Pyramide du Louvre, seen here.

Taken in spring at dusk with the last glow of daylight, it takes on the watercolor hues of l'heure bleue.  The "blue hour" is a magical time of day when the softness of the fading light of day creates the colors only seen in artists' palettes and then dances across the Pyramide.

Theme Day - "People on the Street"

People on the Street

Observing the brisk stride of synchronized steps,
one would believe that the afternoon outing is a well-rehearsed routine.

It makes you wonder how many years
they have walked together through life.

Au Vieux Paris d'Arcole - Theme Day

Au Vieux Paris d'Arcole
depuis 1594

Hidden on a narrow street so very close to Notre Dame, this auberge has been open since 1594.  The structure itself was built in 1512 after completion of the Cathedral.

The ancient wisteria twists upon itself,
framing the door and window above.

Today I join the City Daily Photo bloggers with a traditional first day of the month theme,
this first day of February, "ENTRY."

Photo of the Year 2013 - Theme Day

Favorite photo of the year

This black and white is my favorite for the action, interest, and detail.  A breezy but sunny day on Rue Saint-Honoré was enjoyed by this woman sitting alone and enjoying her cafe.  The waiter is in watchful attendance while the lovers in the background enjoy a bottle of wine.

For me, this photo exemplifies life in Paris, la vie quotidienne.

Seen from the top of Arc de Triomphe the height
of la Grande Arche de la Defense dwarfs the surrounding rooftops.

The height restrictions for buildings
have limited the number of towering structures and their locations.

Palais Garnier - colonne rostrale

The rostral columns of Palais Garnier

The entrance to Pavillon du Chef de l'Etat (House of the Head of State),
which was turned into the Musée de Opéra on the western facade
of Opéra National de Paris Garnier,
is framed by two granite columns by Henri Alfred Jacquemart,
adorned with lamps and the masts of ships.
The bows of the four ships appear to have eyes.

Although other portions of this exquisite heritage site
have been restored since it was built in 1875,
the ceinture de lumière (belt of light) encircling the building has not.
Earlier this year an appeal was made to the public
to adopt one of the 22 lampadaires, 2 candélabres, 22 cariatides, and 14 columns.
The details of the rostral columns and the musical instrument-themed street lamps
on the opposite side of the opera house are stunning.

Château de Chambord - une grande façade!

Chambord
a very grand façade

Constructed for King François I in the early years of the Sixteenth Century, this chateau features 440 rooms, 282 fireplaces, and 84 staircases.  In the center hall is a grand double-helix open staircase spanning three floors.  The château also features 128 meters of façade, more than 800 sculpted columns and an elaborately decorated roof. When François I commissioned the construction of Chambord, he wanted it to look like the skyline of Constantinople.

In 1939, shortly before the outbreak of World War II, the art collections of the Louvre and Compiègne museums were stored at the Château de Chambord.

Siegfried Courteau - Percussionniste

2012 Oct 4 Thursday_267DSC_8359 - color

To say that he is a percussionist is a gross understatement.
He is a musical artist, pushing the limits and producing delightful rhythms and sounds.
He is versatile as seen here arranging his "instruments" of tone.

He appeared this day at an exhibition opening for artist Xavier Rémon-Beauvais, a goldsmith.  The exhibit and acoustic performance were found in a gallery in the narrow pedestrian street, Cour Damoye.
The percussionist's tools are the art of the goldsmith.

You must pay attention as you never know what greatness you will discover:
two artists at the top of their fields... in the same gallery.
