Les Portes de Parc Monceau

The Gates of Parc Monceau

Gabriel Davioud (1824-1881) was given the job
of creating the monumental entrances for this quiet park on boulevard de Courcelles
with the imposing gilded wrought iron gates.

The details have been meticulously maintained,
and reflect the afternoon sun.

Des Grandes Maisons

These beautiful homes overlook Parc de Monceau.

I do not know which view is better:
The homes seen from my vantage point in the park,
or the park seen from the grand balconies.

L'horloge

Built between 1194 and 1250, Chartres Cathedral is one of the finest examples of
French Gothic architecture.  The 12th century structure is at least the fifth to occupy the
site since the fourth century.

Having read much about World War II in recent years,
it is interesting to know that the magnificent windows seen still today
were removed in 1939 before the Germans advanced.
The glass was cleaned and releaded before
being returned to their original placement.

Chartres is only fifty miles outside of Paris
and worth a day trip to see this cathedral and two other churches.
The old town is charming and a step back in time.

Rue Raynouard - Passy

Just above the wall-lined street you can see
this wonderful collection of windows, roofs, balconies,
and chimneys all washed in the glow of a winter afternoon's sunliight.

The architecture and textures
have interesting details.

Pont Alexandre III

Pont Alexandre III

Adorned with gilt, ironwork,
and more details than can be seen in a single photograph,
Pont Alexandre III is a great spot for photographs.

At night you can enjoy the lights
of La Tour Eiffel with reflections on the Seine.

Passage du Caire - Restaurant le Champollion

Le Champollion

Not quite the lunch hour,
but the tables and chairs are ready

The heaters under the awning keep it a moderate temperature
on all but the most frigid days.

(Do not forget to look-up
at the head sculptures on the building)

When you turn a corner in Paris
you never know what you will discover...

one of the oldest churches in Paris,
a mixture of centuries of architecture,
and a quiet place for un café

Looking from one apartment window towards another,
admiring the architecture,
the tall windows,

...and wishing that I had the blue street sign

A Lion in Winter Autumn

Looking up at the sculpted balcony with its ironwork balustrade
one sees the trellis of red and graceful curtains.

Do not miss the guardian of it all,
le lion.

Cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris

Notre Dame

The afternoon sun adds a golden tint to the south side of Notre Dame with all the griffins lined up on their perches.  The details of the architecture could keep you sketching for months.
