Église Saint-Étienne du Mont

Église Saint-Étienne du Mont

Perhaps one of my favorite churches in Paris,
and I discover a new detail with every visit.

Église Saint-Étienne du Mont

Angels We Have Heard on High

Église Saint-Étienne du Mont may have more angels
than in any church I have seen in Paris.

This choir of angels adorns the organ case built in 1633
by Jean Buron. It is perhaps the most magnificent in Paris
and is the oldest case which is preserved completely.

Église Saint-Étienne du Mont

Églies Saint-Étienne du Mont

This side entrance of Saint-Étienne
are closed but the ornate doorway is stunning.
Many will recognize it from the movie "Midnight in Paris"

Built between 1492 and 1626, the light interior is filled with cherubs and angels.
I would put it high on your list.

There are so many obvious treasures in this church,
but one cannot overlook the small details such as this.

Panthéon et Église Saint Étienne du Mont

Looking across the end of the Square de l'Île de France the textures and colors are punctuated by the 5ème arrondissement's notable skyline.  The Panthéon is the tallest building and Église Saint Étienne du Mont is to the left, an easy walk from Pont Saint Louis where this photo was taken.

Église Saint Étienne du Mont

Église Saint Étienne du Mont

The windows, the architecture, the history,
the art, the details, the stories...

You could sketch, draw, paint, photograph...
listen, observe, watch, study, pray...
and still not absorb it all

Église Saint-Étienne du Mont - l'orgue

Église Saint-Étienne du Mont

The organ of Saint-Étienne du Mont
is a marvel of architectural design and carving,
dating back to the early 17th Century.

 From this angle it appears
that the angels and cherubs might jump or fly

Rue de la Montagne Sainte-Geneviève - le travailleur

2012 Jan 15 2nd_0440

Le travailleur

Color-matched for the job at hand,
this worker made a nice contrast to the stark winter scene.

May you not work too hard this week
and take time to enjoy your surroundings,
wherever they may be.

Église Saint Étienne du Mont - l'orgue

This masterpiece of carving is the work of Jean Buron of 1633, encasing the organ of Saint Etienne du Mont.  The organ itself was built by the master organ builder Pierre le Pescheur and completed in 1636.  Over the centuries, some of the most reknown organ builders in the world made revisions to this organ, from Clicquot to Cavaillé-Coll, Beuchet-Debierre, and several more.

Cherubs and angels surely would make a joyful noise here.

L'architecture et la glycine

Walking to Église Saint-Etienne du Mont, this scene of architecture, sculpture,
iron fence (en bleu), and climbing wisteria caught my eye.
There are places all over Paris in full bloom with this cascading lavender bloom.

Église Saint Étienne du Mont

The churches of Paris are museums of sculpture, architecture, and paintings.
Église Saint-Étienne du Mont is abundantly overflowing in its richness.

Église Saint Étienne du Mont - Angels on High

Angels on high

I do not believe that anyone has counted the angels and cherubs in Église Saint Étienne du Mont, but there are many, perhaps hundreds.

I have brought you here before and will bring you again.  This bright, airy church is filled with details, history, angels, and light.  I will have to return for a concert.

La Parisienne - artisan boulanger

Between the Métro Cardinal Lemoine and Église Saint Etienne du Mont, we happened upon this bright fushia (rose foncé) building and sign.  The style reminded me more of the signs seen in Zurich than in Paris, but the boulangerie definitely brightened up this intersection on Rue Monge.  It is reported to have excellent baguettes.

(This is for Starman, who wanted to see some color)

The special details of this church continue to delight, whether it is the abundance of angels and cherubs or something as simple as a light against the background of stained glass.

Église Saint-Étienne du Mont - IV

Église Saint-Étienne du Mont sits among some giants in the Latin Quarter, just across from the Pantheon on Place Saint Geneviève. It is difficult to choose a favorite church in Paris, but this would surely be high on my list.

Église Saint-Étienne du Mont - l'orgue

The organ of Saint-Étienne du Mont is a marvel of architectural design and carving, dating back to the early 17th Century. It would be a challenge to count the cherubs and angels in this church, starting here with the organ. If you decide to count, do not forget to look at the ceiling for the little cherub faces.

I have shown this church before, here and here. It is just across the square from the Parthenon in the 5ième arrondissement.
