Marché Maubert - des légumes

Marché Maubert

Paris is not just about the baguettes,
the pain de mie, the croissants, the tarts, the gâteaux...

Just stroll through one of the weekday street markets
to see some beautiful, fresh vegetables (and fruits)

Promo! Des orchidées

Orchids

A street-side display of flowers is typical in all parts of Paris.  The orchids so carefully protected sous cellophane are a promise of colorful plants for months to come.  The prices seen here are comparable to what one might expect to pay at home.  If you are going to be in Paris for a week or so, a pot of these orchids would make you feel right at home.

Thinking of my daddy who had
a greenhouse full of these for most of my life.

Des fleurs de Marché Maubert - XIV

Marché Maubert
since 1547

The flowers in the street market appear with the daylight, at Marché Maubert, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.  Most of the vendors display their wares at Marché Monge on the other days of the week.  Both of these markets have a flavor of the neighborhoods, and I have stayed just around the corner of Marché Maubert on many visits to Paris.

If you return late in the day, you would not even imagine that there had been a street market only a few hours earlier.  The vendors fold up their tents for another day.  The city of Paris supplies and installs the poles and supports for this market at Place Maubert and at other market sites around the city.

Pleurote - les marchés de Paris

Pleurote
Oyster mushrooms

The mushrooms are plentiful in the Paris markets, fresh from the countryside.  Although I have not cooked in Paris, it would be a delight to choose from the abundance of fresh produce.

These oyster mushrooms would be just the thing for a recipe I use at home for mushroom soup.  The basic premise is to use all the mushrooms you can fit into the pan.

Marché Maubert - une couronne

Une couronne

If only I could reach through the photo to pluck this beautiful wreath ...

I do not think that US Customs would permit it to be carried home on a plane.
I got in trouble once for having an orange in my bag upon my return to the US.

For now, the photo will just have to suffice...

Marché Maubert - des noix

Pistache, amande, noix du Brésil, noix de cajou,
noix de macadamia, cacahuète, noisette, pignon

The bins are full in the street market of Marché Maubert.
Can you think of any other nuts?

(comme cinglé?)

La saison des champignons

My dear young friend Isabelle from Bordeaux introduced me to the delicious cèpes seen above in Marché Maubert.  She took me to a delightful restaurant serving authentic Savoyard fondue with a generous mix of cèpes.  November is mushroom season as you can see from the selection above.  In addition to the cèpes and girolle, there were coulmelles, trompettes, and pied mouton.

I learn much with every trip and will share the restaurant with you on another post.

Marché Maubert - Paris friend

There is a story here.

In April, I returned to the thrice-weekly marché in Place Maubert to deliver a portrait that I had taken in June 2010.  As I have mentioned before, I carry back to Paris on each trip a small folio of portraits that I have taken.  When possible I deliver the photograph to the subject, reminding them when the shot was taken.  Although I am a master of stealth photography almost all of the "returns" were taken with permission.

So, back to the story... In April I was delivering the photo below and this fellow in yellow saw the exchange asking if he was not handsome enough to have his photo taken.  Bien sûr!  When I arrive in Paris in three weeks I will have the top photo tucked into my bag and will find him to renew acquaintances.  I always enjoy the triangle-folded treats from these vendors and in April they would not let me pay.

Nothing like making friends in Paris, n'est-ce pas?

Marché Maubert - VIII

The oldest street market in Paris, established in 1547, Marché Maubert is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.  But, do not be late as the stalls will close by 2:30 or 3, and you will not find the sumptuous stacks of artichokes, leeks, and carrots. There are stands for flowers, rugs, pashminas, fromage, fleur de sel, textiles from Provence, meats, seafood, carry out food (prête à emporter) pour manger sur le pouce.

I have featured this marché before as it was my "neighborhood" for many trips to Paris.  I will visit my friends there very soon, to buy their produce and cheeses, and to take their photos again and to recall the snow and cold of last December and the wonderful weather of my last visit in April.  Of course, I will have some photos in my pocket...

Marché Maubert VII

Found in Place Maubert, this thrice weekly market has its regular vendors of food, rugs, flowers, spices, and accessories. However, I had not seen this artist previously. He had a book with drawings and pictures of his work and some interested purchasers. I would like the tall piece but in general would only want a single selection of this style and probably would not buy it in Paris. What about you?

Les Grenades

These are not pastries but they are delicious and so good for you. If I eat enough of these healthy fruits I should be able to indulge in the pâtisseries next week, bien sûr!

I always think that the pomegranate seeds look like little rubies. Je l'adore.

Place Maubert

This fresh assortment of seafood is seen daily at the market in Place Maubert. You can buy your sardines here, wine at the store next door while greeting le petit chien, fromage at Fromage (bien sûr). On the corner you can buy vegetables of the season and just a block away you can buy the best baguettes in Paris, Baguette Monge, at Eric Kayser's boulangerie.

It may take you some time to make your purchases as you chat with the vendors... very friendly and helpful with recommendations... (repeat daily)
