Théâtre du Palais-Royal

Théâtre du Palais-Royal

Originally known as a puppet theatre (Théâtre des Beaujolais) Théâtre du Palais-Royal was built in 1784 with seating for 750.  Through a rich history it has been a venue for operettas, plays, Neapolitan puppets, performing dogs (!), vaudeville, and comedies.  The comédie mêlée d'ariettes (comedy mixed with brief arias) was performed here including some early works of Hervé.

La Vie Parisienne, by Jacques Offenbach, was first presented here in 1866.  It is known as an opéra bouffle which is a form of operetta with elements of comedy, parody, satire, and farce.

My mother would have loved this place, given music like Offenbach.

What a beautiful building. It's flamboyant facade is an invitation to step into another world.

Great composition! Amazed that the street is so empty. Early morning or late evening or siesta time?

What a very pretty building. The shows it has put on in its history sound fun.

Attending an event there would have been an event in itself.

How I should love to see the inside! At a glorious dining experience at Verjun, our table overlooked the theatre Palais Royale and when we left, we passed by -- so beautiful, I wish I could have seen beyond the exterior. Thanks for bringing back the memory (and the restaurant? Highly recommended!)
