Église Saint Roch - unveiled

If you have been visiting my blog regularly, you know that Église Saint Roch holds a place in my heart. It is the first thing you see when you wake up each morning from Janeen's apartment and hear the pealing of the church bells.

When Marie and I were in Paris in April, we entered the church just before the evening Palm Sunday service. I knew that there were two organs in St Roch but to my surprise we discovered the third, a small organ contained in a large cabinet. The organist opened the doors of the organ to release the full sound in the circular space of the apse.

I felt as if we had discovered a treasure.

Tuileries at Twilight

After the sun retires from the bright summer day, the long shadows of sunset relinquish the park to the soft palette of blues and greens. The park takes on a new persona for the brief time before total darkness, the magical twilight of Paris.

Near Place d'Aligre on a Sunday morning, one finds the world perched in outdoor cafés. I was captivated by the rich façade of this pâtisserie and would have been tempted to lounge but alas there was no room!

Le Moulin de la Galette

In April, Marie and I enjoyed a delightful and leisurely déjeuner with Peter at Le Moulin de la Galette. We spent the day strolling the streets of Montmartre and found the back courtyard a beautiful respite from the tourists of Place du Tertre.

I wish that I had one or two of these glasses. Hummmmm, must go back.

Bistro Pré aux Clercs

As we near the summer solstice I am reminded of this wonderful spot, Bistro Pré aux Clercs, where friends met last June before a night shoot at la Tour Eiffel. Marie and I returned on the evening of la Fête de la Musique to enjoy salads on the terrace and listen to the delightful sounds of a jazz quartet.


I wish I was there right now... Care to join me?

I do not know what caught my attention first, the orange calla lillies or the stunning paving tiles arranged in cascading semi-circles

Built between 1774 and 1784 by the architect Jean François Chalgrin, this beautiful church is filled with visual treasures. The stained-glass dome with its regal reds and blues is high above the apse.

Jardin des Tuileries -- au printemps, en hiver

As the temperatures in Paris are rising, it seems a good time to recall a familiar setting in a colder month. This photo was taken in April at Jardin des Tuileries while walking and shooting with Marie and Peter.

I loved the contrast with this winter scene of the same pond when Holly and I were there in early December. You can see the full-sized original post here.

Passage du Caire

As Marie and I wandered the streets of the 2ième arrondissement we saw a small green space, un petit jardin, on a triangle of ground called Place du Caire. As we glanced up we saw this façade, an entrance to Passage du Caire, adorned with three heads of the goddess Hathor. The Egyptian theme is further carried out with the band of pseudo-hieroglyphs above the sculptures.

Now, for the rest of the story... I have been trying to find the name, the exact location, the street address off and on for several weeks. Marie had joined in the hunt as well. So, what expert would you turn to in the same situation? Why, Peter, of course! He responded in an instant and so I am linking to his post which is much more comprehensive than mine. Found in Place Maubert, this thrice weekly market has its regular vendors of food, rugs, flowers, spices, and accessories. However, I had not seen this artist previously. He had a book with drawings and pictures of his work and some interested purchasers. I would like the tall piece but in general would only want a single selection of this style and probably would not buy it in Paris. What about you?

On our way to Musée Marmottan, we walked from the Métro through Jardins du Ranelagh and watched this chic grandmother strolling her little grandson through the park.

Looking up into the dome of Eglise Saint Louis d'Antin, only a block from Printemps and Galeries Lafayette. The outside is plain and nondescript, but what beautiful sights are contained within.

In the window of Galeries Lafayette, the display of kitchen utensils had this special grater. I wish that I had bought a few of them for gifts and one for my home. It would certainly give one something to think about while grating carrots for dinner.

Dark Clouds

Parisians have not seen the dark storm clouds of rain in several weeks and there is a drought concern across France. Not wishing to rain on anyone's vacation but a few serious showers might improve the situation.
