Changement de saison - la Seine

It is almost spring and all across the hemisphere
people are looking forward to longer days and
warmer weather.

There will be many evenings
along the Seine with friends

Square du Vert Galant

Square du Vert Galant

This little tear-drop of green is not exactly a secret place,
but it is most often photographed from the other direction
(as seen in my banner photo above).

The view from Pont des Arts gives the illusion
of a ship's bow.  You can access this little park
at the midpoint of Pont Neuf.

Pont des Arts - As-tu un clé?

Pont des Arts
Do you have a key?

This pedestrian bridge is in the news this week.
The bridge was closed for a period of time
as the weight of the "love locks" was so heavy
that it tore a portion of the railing away from the bridge.
The city (or the mysterious lock-remover)
has periodically pruned locks from this bridge
 and Pont de l'Archevêché,
but they re-appear almost as quickly as they are removed.

La Seine en hiver

The Seine in Winter

Taken from almost the same spot on Pont des Arts as my header
the starkness of winter stands in contrast to the lush, colorful shot of summer.

I find a still, almost silvery beauty
of the river in winter.

Au bord de la Seine - les amis II

la Seine,
the water's edge

When the weather cooperates
one can find groups of friends gathering on a Friday evening
to share stories of the week and
simply to enjoy la vie quotidienne on the banks of the Seine.

May you "exhale"
and enjoy the company of friends this weekend.

Pont des Arts - love locks

Love locks
Pont des Arts

I have photographed the "love locks" for years on the Pont des Arts and always said that if my sweetheart came with me to Paris that we would put one here on the Pont des Arts.

He did come with me last March and after attaching our lock threw away a red key (which was superfluous for a combination lock).  It was at the moment of sunset, and we were in good company with others on that March evening.  In October I went back to check on our lock and it was most assuredly missing.  The fact is that all of these lovers' locks weigh down the bridge and it appears that the locks are periodically "pruned."  In May of 2010, they all disappeared overnight but the city of Paris claimed innocence.

We will return and affix another lock, a tiny discrete one, which should not cause any attention (or pruning).

Deux parapluies

Two umbrellas
Quai Malaquais
(near Institut de France)

Looking down from Pont des Arts to the quai below,
it seems that the rain was just nothing more than an annoyance
for these two tourists.

Travel tip for Paris:
Raincoat (imperméable) with a hood
Umbrella (parapluie)
An extra pair of shoes (chaussures)
Oh, and a waterproof camera (appareil photo)

La Seine - un aire de pique-nique

La Seine
un aire de pique-nique

Having a picnic with friends along the Seine...
what could be any better?

I am honored to be invited to join the City Daily Photo Blogs, and with my acceptance, to participate in the first day of each month with "theme day."  November's theme is "The Water's Edge" and here is the link to visit other cities around the world.

La Seine et Square du Vert Galant

Square du Vert Galant
as seen from Pont des Arts

An early evening in April we strolled to Pont des Arts, hand in hand.
So romantic, we were alone...
with about a hundred of our fellow romantics, picknickers, and flaneurs on the bridge.

We watched the sun set into Seine
and tossed our key into the water below.
Yes, the key was red.

Square du Vert-Galant

Square du Vert-Galant

If you look at my banner photo you will see this square taken from Pont des Arts in summer.  This narrow piece of land on the western tip of Île de la Cité
looks much like the bow of a ship in the middle of the Seine
and is a beautiful, quiet retreat on this January day.

It was named for the dashing 16th century king of France,
Henry IV, known as the lusty gallant!

Quai Malaquais -- des espions?

The nearly deserted and wet Quai Malaquais, entre Pont du Carrousel and Pont des Arts, makes you think about December or January. This photo was taken early in the morning en juin while most of Paris is sleeping. At 6:30am, most of the tourists are asleep too!

(Do you think that these two are spies and getting ready to exchange briefcases sur le quai? I should hide just in case!)
