une rue cachée

A charming hidden street
with vines and trees,
a slight spring-like breeze,
and an occasional glimpse of a pussy-cat.

Chez Gladines

Chez Gladines
l'Original

This setting in Butte aux Cailles is the original restaurant
serving Basque cuisine.  If you are looking for elegant dining
pass on by, but if you want to experience a local eatery
and all the salad you can manage for about 10€
and served in a stainless steel mixing bowl, come on in.

(I have also eaten twice at Chez Gladines on Blvd Saint-Germain -
same menu but different atmosphere)

Buveuses de thé

Tea drinkers

On a brisk afternoon we found we found
these women enjoying tea in the winter sun.

I wonder if they knit as well?

Rue des Cinq Diamants - le chef

le chef

On rue de la Butte aux Cailles, the chefs and cooks from
various restaurants gather outside to chat,
have a smoke, and get ready for the busy lunch crowd.

I have seen this same chef on three trips
and will be taking a photo to him in a few weeks.

I wonder what he will be serving that day...

Sillicat s'est perdue

What a precious face

I do hope that Sillicat found his way home!

Chez Gladines

Chez Gladines is one of my favorite new finds.  I was there with Holly in January, and then took Peter and my husband in March.  It is in Butte aux Cailles and always full of people and spilling out into the street.  This shot is taken from the back room and very moody.  The "No CB" is "no carte bancaire" and means that they do not take credit cards.  The food is cheap and good, evidenced by the crowds.

Les yeux bleus

Seen on Rue Butte aux Cailles, the eyes appear to follow you as you walk.
Do you think it would be a bit disturbing
to have them positioned right outside of your apartment window?

Could these be the eyes of Dr. Eckelberg, blue and gigantic?

Apiculteur parisien

This friendly gentleman with a delightful sense of humor has a boutique, Les Abeilles,
selling honey and other "bee-products" on La Butte aux Cailles.
You can even buy all that you need to set up as a beekeeper.
He is an expert in les abeilles, miel, cire d'abeilles, a true apiculture parisien!

A purchase of honey and beeswax candles was made after a delightful visit with him in the petite shop.  Two large vats of honey along with all the other products give the small space a sweet aroma.

Monsieur Schakmundès became my newest Paris friend,
and I will carry this portrait back to him in January.

(for Holly, the Queen Bee)
