Chez Gladines

Chez Gladines is one of my favorite new finds.  I was there with Holly in January, and then took Peter and my husband in March.  It is in Butte aux Cailles and always full of people and spilling out into the street.  This shot is taken from the back room and very moody.  The "No CB" is "no carte bancaire" and means that they do not take credit cards.  The food is cheap and good, evidenced by the crowds.

Je connais bien ce restaurant mais il faut s'y présenter tôt pour avoir une table...

A fitting moody black and white for this back room eatery.

Moody indeed! Fab photo that could have been taken almost any time in the last eighty years...

When I first saw the post title I thought it said "Chez Gladness". Guess I wasn't far wrong.

This is a new neighborhood for me to check out. Read that the restaurant is wildly popular..reasonable, with long lines!. Your photo is amazing...truly timeless.

I'm with Owen, I thought that as well. Chez Gladness would be a good name for any cafe in Paris. I love Butte aux Cailles. Peter took me there for the first time in 2009 and we went up and down every charming little street. It really is a different part of Paris.

La Butte aux Cailles is a favorite neighborhood of mine, but I do not think I have ever tried "Chez Gladines." This French Girl will add it to her list of places to enjoy when she arrives in Paris in a few weeks. Merci, Genie! Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

Very fitting description based on your photo Because they don't take "carte bancaire" it probably makes it easier to pass some of the savings to their customers by offering reasonable prices. It would definitely explain the crowds! HA

Nicely captured in b&w, Genie! But you're making me very envious as I sit at my desk eating a baloney sandwich (180 degrees from this experience). :~{

I have a few very good stories about this place, and will tell one of them with my next post, along with a portrait.

Although I had walked with Peter through this area before, he had never been to Chez Gladines. I take it as a personal challenge when I can take Peter to a place he has never been at least once per trip to Paris. In March, I counted three new experiences for him! It was all new to my husband who enjoyed Chez Gladines immensely!

We made an attempt to have dinner there a few years ago, but there was a large crowd waiting to get in so we ended up having dinner at the Italian place down the street.

Wonderful lighting, texture and atmosphere -- I think I am eventually going to run out of adjectives to compliment your work -- perhaps a generic 'Looked at Your Shot' and you can assume the best -- lol --

I love this shot...I feel as if I am walking in, looking for an empty table where I can sit and soak up the atmosphere, enjoy the plat du jour and imbibe some vin.
