Typical of many Paris doors from the 19th century, the details of the stone architecture are unique in design and frame beautifully the well-preserved heavy doors.  The cart belongs to the postman (le facteur) to transport the mail as s/he walks the neighborhood.  The ornamental wrought iron piece at the foot of a door is called a "chasse-roue" and was a practical implement to protect the door or gate from the carriage wheels.  You will see them all over Paris, some of wrought iron as seen here, and others of stone.  It would be interesting to photograph a collection of the different designs.

Métro Réaumur-Sébastopol - Entrée d'Hector Guimard

Art Nouveau design

These famed entrances designed by Hector Guimard were surrounded in talk and not a little controversy in 1900.  The most elaborate were those with glass canopies, of which three still exist.  

Guimard's design above can be seen all over Paris, and there are 80 of this style with cast-iron balustrades decorated in plant-like motifs still remaining today.  The orange light globes sit atop ornate cast-iron supports in the form of plant stems.  Typical of the Art Nouveau style, the entire design is quite "organic."

Yesim Chambrey - élegante et sophistiquée

Yesim Chambrey

This chic boutique nestled in the narrow streets of Saint Germain des Prés has remarkable windows.  The awnings are truly three-dimensions but the curtains of black-white stripes are flat and permanent against the inside of the window.  The bright lighting always makes a striking sight on Rue de l'Abbaye.

The feminine couture of Turkish-born designer Yesim Chambrey are remarkably girly and fashionable.  It is an approachable boutique and worth a look.

Perigot - design utilitaire

In the Galerie le Carrousel du Louvre

we found this fashion forward store selling household utensils,

all designed by Frederic Perigot on the concept that "simple" is better. 

Every product is based on an aesthetic ideal, both practical and affordable. 

The window design in itself was enough

to make me want to take home mops and dusters by the armful. 

How about un chariot de marche for the daily market shopping?
