Repetto - Lac des Cygnes

Repetto
Swan Lake

Once upon a time a Princess named Odette
was under the spell of the Evil Wizard Rothbart.
He turned her into a swan after the moon set
and the spell could only be broken by a vow of everlasting love.

The Paris Opera Ballet performed Rudolph Nureyev's production of
Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake earlier this year. The Repetto window
pays homage to the genius of the composer and the choreographer.

The large window of the Repetto flagship store on Rue de la Paix
will always amaze you with its beauty and creativity.
My favorites are those which feature a ballet such as this one.

Les ballerines de Palais Garnier

The ballerinas of Palais Garnier

On a rainy December morning these ballerinas
danced in the windows of the gift shop of Palais Garnier.

Never miss a chance to dance...

Repetto - une réflexion

Repetto

The reflection here belies the upscale street of Rue de la Paix.
Perhaps the black and white image gives it a less polished look,
but I can assure you that the rent here would be quite high.

Repetto en hiver

Repetto

It is always a treat to see the Repetto windows on Rue de la Paix
with crystal chandeliers and wall of mirrors.
The snow-flocked trees frame the ballet scene vignettes.

By January 7, the windows will have a heap
of once-worn pale pink pointe shoes to announce Les Soldes.

Repetto XIII - "pink"

Repetto pink

Repetto's windows are perhaps my favorite
and definitely the most anticipated on each trip.
The main store on Rue de la Paix is just a short block from Métro Opéra.

Street lamps - Palais Garnier

Street Lamps
Palais Garnier

These unusual street lamps are found in front of the grand Palais Garnier.
The musical instruments seems fitting for the home of the Paris Opera.

This is my contribution to the

Palais Garnier - XIII

Palais Garnier

On every visit to this Beaux-Arts opera house one can make new discoveries.
Just look at the art and detail applied to the lamps surrounding this building.

I think that the Phantom would be pleased
to see the repeating patterns of music symbols.

Palais Garnier - les danseuses de Noël

These graceful ballerinas dance under the Christmas tree of Palais Garnier's gift shop.
What a view of the icy street below.

These handcrafted papier-mâché dolls are illuminated with the flick of a switch.

Palais Garnier is one of my favorite places in Paris,
for the architecture, the music, the ballets and operas, the history, and...
the Phantom.

Repetto - XI

La vitrine de Repetto

When I arrive in Paris, Repetto is one of my first stops,
not to buy the shoes, but to gaze at their window display.

My favorites are those with ballet tutus such as here.

Dansez!

The Repetto window on Rue de la Paix is always on my list...

This display in white gives the illusion of petals being blown from a delicate flower.

Palais Garnier - The Grand Foyer

The opulence of Palais Garnier defies description.  This tourist shot does at least give one an idea of the scale and size of this Beaux-Arts opera house.  I will be returning here next week to feel the music in every crevice, to imagine the famous dancers who have graced her stage, to appreciate the barely-known architect who created her.

To me it is like so much of Paris.  One cannot truly grasp the whole with a single visit, and I want to see it again with the fresh eyes of my husband who will be making his first trip to Paris.  We will be there next week.

Virginia (Paris Through my Lens), a dear friend and fellow traveler to Paris, sent me a link to this marvelous 25 minute documentary on the story and building of Palais Garnier.  I think that you will not be able to stop once you start.

bon weekend

Repetto VIII

Dansez!

Repetto's window on Rue de la Paix is always on my list,
and the petite souris did not disappoint.

Dansez-vous?

A few weeks ago just after dark, Marie, Peter and I were walking back toward the apartment along Rue St. Honoré and saw this window display at Chantal Thomass. The creativity of the "window artists" never ceases to amaze me in Paris. Here we have a salute to ballet with an authentic ballet barre, tutu, and pointe shoes (Repetto, bien sûr)... all with the promises of luxurious lingerie. Nothing naughty, just elegant French lingerie.

Would you buy these?*

Les danseuses - Palais Garnier

On the marble steps in this beautiful opera house, we found these petite dancers lighting the way.

How sweet are they?

Ballerine en Rouge - reflection

The December windows at Repetto on Rue de la Paix, almost in the shadow of Palais Garnier, were stunning with three ballet costumes. I took many photos and will share the other two costumes in later posts. It was not until I began to read and translate the silver wording that I discovered the following:

Jewels is a ballet from George Balanchine in three acts which premiered in 1967 in New York. Each ballet is represented by a gem:

Emerald, set to the music of Gabriel Fauré, evoking Paris and Opera, birthplace of romantic dance in France.

Diamond, is the classic Pyotr Illych Tchaikovsky and a hommage to Marius Pelipa at the Kirov Ballet.

Ruby, which is set to the music of Igor Stravinsky, recalls the dynamism and vivacity of musical comedies in NYC.
