Like many of the churches in Paris

(and in all of Europe), Saint-Laurent saw many additions

and revisions over several centuries.

One of the oldest covered market in Paris 

features Baltard style glass and ironwork with high ceilings

and an expanse of windows. 

These architectural details permit 

much natural light and great ventilation.

Église Saint-Laurent

Saint-Laurent was founded in the 6th century as the chapel of an abbey.  

The present church dates to 1429 and finally completed in the 19th century.  

It was built on Paris' north-south axis, 

linking Senlis and Orléans, 

as laid out by the Romans in  the 1st century.

There are always candles 

in the many chapels

Saint-Laurent was founded in the 6th century as the chapel of an abbey.  

The present church dates to 1429 and finally completed in the 19th century.  

The organ was built by François and Hippolyte Du Castel 

between 1682 and 1685.  Over the centuries it has been 

rebuilt and restored in four different centuries 

but 20 original stops date from before the revolution.  

You can hear this magnificent organ 

on Saturday and Sunday masses and for occasional concerts.

I took this photo three years ago, a photo of a photo.

It was perched on a ledge behind my table at Hôtel du Nord on Canal St. Martin.

Often, when I look through my Paris photos 

I run across this one and wonder just who this man might be.  

Is he a movie star, un chanteur, a friend of the restaurant, who?

I almost posted this in black and white, 

but could you do that to those aquamarine eyes?

using the chasse-roue as a step to reach the bell.

Gare de l'Est resembles the Belle Époque generation of train stations, 

and the west wing is the original building of 1847.   

An interesting note: On October 4, 1883, 

the Gare de l'Est saw the first departure 

of the Orient Express bound for Istanbul.

On this day I was not venturing nearly that far, 

but there is nothing quite so pleasant as traveling by train.

Marché Saint Quentin - un marché couvert

Marché Saint Quentin

I knew of this covered market, but had not visited Saint Quentin, one of the few remaining covered markets in Paris.  The fruits and vegetables are acceptable, but this market shines with its international flavor and food offerings.  The soaring ceilings have been protecting Paris shoppers for over a hundred years.

There are delicacies from Africa and Italy, spices from north Africa, and even Pasteis from Portugal.  There are a few vendors with region-specific foods from France and a beer boutique.

Just a stone's throw from Canal Saint-Martin is this 17th century hospital, 

built when the outbreak of plagues threatened the city, overwhelming the main hospital.  

"Contained within a square court and enclosed by a wall with four corner pavilions, the brick and stone cloister-like construction was intended to keep personnel in and to thus confine the contagion, isolating illness pavilion by pavilion." (Five Hundred Buildings of Paris, Kathy Borrus)

It functions today as part of the  

Assistance publique - Hôpitaux de Paris hospital system.

Have you ever noticed the people running in train stations?  

It is no different in Paris as we see these passengers hurrying off a train.  

I have done the same myself, hurrying to catch a train 

in Madrid, in Prague, in Vienna, in Milan... and even in Paris.  

Why would one need to run 

with sufficient planning of schedules and locations?  

Well, for one, it is never a simple matter 

to find the correct window for ticket sales.  

Buying tickets on-line in advance will reduce the stress.

Perhaps you will have time to sit in the station 

and photograph others who did not plan as well.  Hummmm...
