Gare de l'Est resembles the Belle Époque generation of train stations, 

and the west wing is the original building of 1847.   

An interesting note: On October 4, 1883, 

the Gare de l'Est saw the first departure 

of the Orient Express bound for Istanbul.

On this day I was not venturing nearly that far, 

but there is nothing quite so pleasant as traveling by train.

As you look beyond the Métro platform, you can see the trains approach and depart.  So many of the stations now protect the awaiting passengers with glass panels and the view is only be into the darkness of the subway tunnels.  I rather enjoy the few above-ground stations and the ability, for now, to peer down the winding tracks.

Have you ever noticed the people running in train stations?  

It is no different in Paris as we see these passengers hurrying off a train.  

I have done the same myself, hurrying to catch a train 

in Madrid, in Prague, in Vienna, in Milan... and even in Paris.  

Why would one need to run 

with sufficient planning of schedules and locations?  

Well, for one, it is never a simple matter 

to find the correct window for ticket sales.  

Buying tickets on-line in advance will reduce the stress.

Perhaps you will have time to sit in the station 

and photograph others who did not plan as well.  Hummmm...
