La tentation

Temptation

Can you get so close to your
screen that you can almost taste these?

At least there is fruit
so it must be healthy!

Boulangerie aux Castelblangeois - un régal pour l'oeil

Boulangerie aux Castelblangeois

Just before anyone considers a New Year's resolution
regarding the consumption of delicious desserts,
gaze one last time at these beauties.

Actually, there are no calories when feasting with the eyes.

Dalloyau

Dalloyau

Definitely some shades of pink here!

The pastries are divine, beautifully served
with tea or coffee, or
wrapped like a present to take home.

Le Bon Marché - La Grande Epicerie de Paris

Le Bon Marché

Although you cannot take photos inside La Grande Epicerie de Paris*
you have ample opportunity to photograph through the windows.

I wonder if he even notices what is happening on the street.

Un grand macaron de framboise!

A large raspberry macaron!

Macarons are a challenge to make with careful attention
to the humidity, the age of the eggs, the balance of heat in the oven,
the phase of the moon.

However, I cannot imagine
how many attempts it would take
in order to get a perfect one of this size.
At least the failures become "family macarons"
and no one complains!

(just kidding about the phase of the moon)

Theme Day - Nourriture à emporter!

Carry-out!

In Paris my favorite "carry-out" is not a single café or bistrot, but the whole row of shops at Place Maubert.  One can start at the wine shop with the friendly King Charles Spaniel; move next door to the fromagerie, to the market on the corner for some fruit, the Charcuterie for saucisson sec, and finally Eric Kayser for une baguette Monge and a pastry for dessert.

You always stop last at Eric Kayser so you can stand in the fast-moving line for baguettes, still warm from the oven.  While you are there grab a little something to have with your café in the morning.
Eat one of the warm baguettes as you stand on the street outside.

Now I am hungry!

blé sucré - miam-miam

blé sucré

blé sucré is relatively new on the Paris bakery scene when one considers the legends of Ladurée and Pierre Hermé.  Founded by patissier Fabrice Le Bourdat, the list of temptations is long.  The quality is high and yet the prices are not.  So, what should you choose?
pain au chocolat, madeleine, and financier

Still hungry?
 éclair, croissant, chaussons aux pommes

More?
How about an assortment of macarons

Ladurée - miam-miam!

Ladurée

It is probably not a healthy way to start the week,
but who could resist these lovelies?

Perhaps just share one with a friend.

Boulangerie St. Antoine - la Parisse

Boulangerie St. Antoine

The window was filled with tempting pastries,
but we opted for baguettes for our spring soirée.
I seem to remember pinching the end off of one before we left the street.

The reflections set the scene here in the heart of the Marais.

Perhaps not the best for the start of a healthy week,
but I do see four things that make me drool in this display case.

At least there is no harm in looking

Eric Kayser - une tarte aux framboises

Eric Kayser's
raspberry tarte

Although it is not as healthy as a bowl of raspberries (perhaps), the delicious bed of custard and perfectly prepared pâte sablée makes it "almost healthy" and too divine to resist.

Gérard Mulot - citron, citron vert, pistache!

Gérard Mulot

Some of the best macarons in Paris are found here.

Although I make some very fine macarons,
I have never been able to make a tree.
Perhaps it is because they are all too quickly consumed!

Hugo et Victor

Hugo et Victor

This round of mouth-watering tart slices will have you pressing your nose to the glass.  Well, you will unless they give you the "look" and you remember that you are not in a dream of your own...

Hugo et Victor is the creation of Hugues Pouget who was formerly the pastry chef at Guy Savoy.  Pastries are categorized as either "Hugo," reinterpretations of the classics, or "Victor," traditional desserts created with an edge.

The shops look more like the displays of fine jewelry than pastries and chocolates with glass cases and downcast spotlights.  For my taste, the chocolates are more outstanding than the pastries.

Ladurée - un petit déjeuner parfait

Ladurée
a perfect breakfast

After buying a selection of macarons,
I peeked into the adjacent dining area for a quick look.

You probably notice the ample servings of breads.
Do not worry as you will walk it off in Paris.

Rue d'Aligre - un café

2011 1106 Nov day 3 DSC_0477

Rue d'Aligre

Taken on a busy market day (Marché d;Aligre),
there is scant room for café table and chairs.
Still, the pastries and a coffee (or thé) can be enjoyed
as the market vendors shout out the quality of their wares.

One thinks that the price of the coffee and pastry is small
for this front row theatre seat.

Lenôtre

Lenôtre

A little something for your  sweet-tooth on a Monday.

The Schuss cake is one of the crown jewels
of a famous French cooking school: Lenôtre.
The base is a sponge cake with a layer of mousse
and a topping of whipped cream.
The varieties and flavors are endless.

Although I admire the aesthetics of this dessert,
I prefer a tart or a portion of chocolate.

How about you?
