Église Saint-Merri
This church was constructed between 1500 and 1550
in a style called "Gothic flamboyant."
Surviving the French Revolution is the oldest bell in Paris,
cast in 1331. (That is not a typo... 1331!!)
This church was reported as a site of the 1832 barricades
fighting in a republican uprising against the July Monarchy.
I will be going back to my unabridged Les Miserables to look for clues.

Wow. Gothic Flamboyant is such a fabulous description of this architecture. The neighboring artwork seems to suggest the Church holds a secret. Perhaps it holds many.
WE passed this so many times, but I don't think we ever entered.
Interesting "sign" asking for silence in the church... :)

Oh, please tell me if you find clues! This was only a few blocks from where Rick and I stayed at our friend's apartment and since he's such a Les Mis fan, I'd love to be able to share that! My first visit to this church was four years ago and I found it just beautiful.
I love the building art to the right of the church. What a juxtaposition! Great history. My daughter is in a production of Les Miserables and she'll love to see a photo of a church that was part of the barricades.
The intricate stonework of the windows is the epitome of Gothic Flamboyant ... much like the tower of the Chartres Cathedral! I am always amazed at the skill and craftsmanship that went into these fabulous buildings! I would love to hear that ancient bell toll!!!
