Église Saint-Augustin

Église Saint-Augustin

Amidst the rooftops and chimney pots,
the dome of Saint-Augustin pushes toward the heavens.

With no special effects or editing,
this scene is seen just as it appeared:
a limited color palette
and situated against the backdrop of modern Paris buildings.

Église Saint-Augustin

Église Saint-Augustin

This majestic church sits at the intersection of major boulevards,
and if you were to walk around the building
you would see as many as fourteen roads and intersections.
It takes a prominent spot in the 8ième
and can be easily recognized by its red cupola.

Holly and I rode our Velibs here up the broad boulevard Malesherbes,
and for our next stop, rode across Avenue des Champs Élysées
and then Pont Alexandre III - bravery at its best.

Église Saint Augustin

Église Saint Augustin

This church of the Second Empire, built between 1860 and 1871 by Victor Baltard, stands above the city landscape.  Saint-Augustin is almost 330 feet long and the dome stands over 260 feet high. The church incorporates several architectural styles, Roman, Gothic, Byzantine and Renaissance, and it is uniquely the first church in Paris to be built around a metal frame.

Although you cannot tell from this perspective,
the church sits majestically at the convergence of many large boulevards,
courtesy of Baron  Haussmann,  It is recognizable from a distance for its red cupola.

Église Saint-Augustin III

Église Saint-Augustin
(seen last Sunday here)

This photo was taken from the rooftop terrace of Printemps.  In addition to the thousands of rooftops and chimneys, the majestic Saint-Augustin stands high above most every other building.  The church is 100 meters long and the dome height is 80 meters (262 feet).

This Byzantine structure, completed in 1871, was one of the first large buildings in Paris built around a metal frame.  It pleases me greatly that the dome is rouge.

Église Saint-Augustin

Église Saint-Augustin

Architect Louis Baltard's design of 1860 sits majectically at the crossroads of major boulevards in the 8eme Arrondissement.  Its prominence and size makes it easy to locate on a Paris map, and the red cupola is instantly recognized above the city buildings.

Église Saint-Augustin

Église Saint-Augustin

Designed and built by the French architect Louis Baltard
between 1860 and 1871 this church sits almost on its own island
centered at the crossroads of major boulevards in the 8ème Arrondissement.
Baltard was involved with the restoration of several Parisian churches
including Saint Germain l'Auxerrois, St. Eustache, Saint-Germain des Pres,
and Saint-Séverin.

He is probably best known for building the twelve pavilions of Les Halles,
the former central market in Paris.
