Basilique Saint Denis

Basilique Saint Denis

It is worth the trip to the outskirts of Paris to see this basilica,
with its outstanding array of
stained glass windows,
Gothic arches,
funerary art,
tombs and sculptures.

Basilique Saint-Denis - VIII

2012 Jan 12 3rd_0071

Basilique Saint-Denis
the crypt

Basilique Saint-Denis is the burial place of French Kings,
with nearly every king from the 10th to the 18th centuries being buried here,
as well as many from previous centuries.
The Revolution and other period of unrest and war
saw the mutilation and mishandling of many bodies.

There are many tombs under the canopy
of grand arches and majestic windows,
but the crypt seen here is much more somber.
I would not want to be here during a thunderstorm
or to experience a loss of power.
The darkness would be overpowering

Marché de Saint-Denis

Marché de Saint-Denis

The Saint-Denis Market is located just a few moments
outside of Paris and is one of the largest in the greater Paris.
Few tourists make a stop here,
but it is rich with international flavors, lively and bustling.

It was closed on the day that five of us visited the Basilique Saint-Denis,
but I am thinking that it would be worth another trip
to the end of Métro Line 13 for the colorful market.

Basilique Saint-Denis

Amidst the many tombs and sculptures of Basilique Saint-Denis
we found this gilt funerary art.
As the subject looks up for an eternity,
the magnificent stained glass of the Apse windows are reflected on the glass case.

Many thanks to Owen of Magic Lantern Show who led our group that day.  How wonderful to meet bloggers face to face.

Basilique Saint-Denis

It is difficult to select a favorite photo from this beautiful Basilica, but this one shows the detail of the sculpture along with one of the thousands of stained glass windows in the background.

Today I am traveling to Paris with my husband and best friend (same person).  We have traveled together to far-flung places but never Paris.  I am excited to show him the city I love.  I do hope that Paris will love him right back.

I will be posting daily and commenting as I can, and I will certainly be reading your comments each day, summarizing briefly our discoveries and treats of each day.

Basilique Saint-Denis

This enthralling basilica just on the outskirts of Paris had been on my list for many trips to Paris.  In January, Peter (Peter's Paris), Virginia (Paris Through My Lens), my daughter Holly and I met up with Owen (Magic Lantern Show) and his delightful wife for a tour, guided by Owen's local expertise and knowledge.

I have many shots to share with you in the months ahead on my Sunday posts, and this statuary piqued my interest today.  The royalty depicted here will have an exquisitely embroidered gown trimmed in the finest silk threads and represented here by the craftsmanship of the sculptor.  She will have some very fine slippers to wear as you can see.
