Marché de Saint-Denis

Marché de Saint-Denis

The Saint-Denis Market is located just a few moments
outside of Paris and is one of the largest in the greater Paris.
Few tourists make a stop here,
but it is rich with international flavors, lively and bustling.

It was closed on the day that five of us visited the Basilique Saint-Denis,
but I am thinking that it would be worth another trip
to the end of Métro Line 13 for the colorful market.

Les couleurs de Paris - le blanc

Sacré Coeur
le blanc

Even with weathering and polution,
this church made of travertine stone remains white.
This sacred landmark sits high on the butte of Montmartre
overseeing all of Paris.

This is my contribution to a five-color series of photos,
and with this I look up in reverence to the whiteness of Sacré Coeur.

Basilique Saint-Denis

It is difficult to select a favorite photo from this beautiful Basilica, but this one shows the detail of the sculpture along with one of the thousands of stained glass windows in the background.

Today I am traveling to Paris with my husband and best friend (same person).  We have traveled together to far-flung places but never Paris.  I am excited to show him the city I love.  I do hope that Paris will love him right back.

I will be posting daily and commenting as I can, and I will certainly be reading your comments each day, summarizing briefly our discoveries and treats of each day.

Basilique Saint-Denis

This enthralling basilica just on the outskirts of Paris had been on my list for many trips to Paris.  In January, Peter (Peter's Paris), Virginia (Paris Through My Lens), my daughter Holly and I met up with Owen (Magic Lantern Show) and his delightful wife for a tour, guided by Owen's local expertise and knowledge.

I have many shots to share with you in the months ahead on my Sunday posts, and this statuary piqued my interest today.  The royalty depicted here will have an exquisitely embroidered gown trimmed in the finest silk threads and represented here by the craftsmanship of the sculptor.  She will have some very fine slippers to wear as you can see.

Sacré Coeur -- King Saint Louis IX, a different view

If you have been to Sacré Coeur en juin then you have an understanding of the crowds of people in/around this beautiful basilica. In reviewing my photos after the trip I realized that I opted to take the odd angles and small details rather than capture the rapping street dancers and the replica key chain hawkers. I did manage to capture some interesting people on the steps which I will share at a later time.

The above photo is one of two equestrian bronzes flanking the triple-arched portico. They represent France's national saints, Joan of Arc and King Saint Louis IX, both created by H. Lefebvre. King Louis IX is the only King of France who was canonized, and there have been many places named after this 13th century French king. St. Louis, MO in the United States is the most familiar to me but others include San Luis Potiso, Mexico, and Sao Luis do Maranhao, Brazil.

The detail in the bronze of King Saint Louis IX caught my attention with the spurs, the soft-soled shoes, the gentle drape of his leather cloak, and the filigree of the bridle. The perfect shade of bronze green is just as I snapped it and you may be able to see the bleeding of color onto the light-colored travertine stone base.
(Oh, and that is not a fly on my camera lens but an airplane!)
