Basilique Saint Denis

Basilique Saint Denis

It is worth the trip to the outskirts of Paris to see this basilica,
with its outstanding array of
stained glass windows,
Gothic arches,
funerary art,
tombs and sculptures.

Beautiful interior arches! First comment using my iPhone. Hope it works!

An intricate network of columns and arches cannot have been easy to construct. Amazing.

Fascinating because one can see here, I think, the transition from a Romanesque to a more characteristically Gothic style of vaulting.

I like this so much! Lights are dramatic and, about the beautiful brickwork in arches, it is said...

Thanks Genie, It brought to me the peace I wish for world and for you too.

Je suis toujours un peu étonné que l'on puisse prendre des photos dans des églises.

it's definitely worth the trip! I did a post in it some time ago myself: http://wordsandpeace.com/2012/06/21/i-love-france-23-basilica-of-saint-denis/

It's beautiful! I really should go there someday.

Superb! Can you imagine being the architect and trying to work out all of this 3D interaction on a flat piece of paper?

wordsandpeace - Thank you for the link to your post and beautiful photos. I love the prisms of light on the columns.

Jack and Joe, those were my thoughts too!

James, put it on your list as it is just a simple Metro ticket to get there

Alain, I think that it is important to be respectful and reverent while in any house of worship and I am sensitive to any parishioners present. In so many areas of the basilica there are only those who are coming to see the history and architecture.

Danar and Jeanie, it is a very peaceful place and possible to find quiet places throughout.

Revrunner, I think that you are correct.

Merci for all of the comments.

Bises,
Genie
