Hôtel de Sully - le jardin

In the orangerie of Hôtel de Sully
you will find this ornate stone lattice
against a backdrop of green....

Green, in the spring, but...
a rich mix of reds and oranges
in the fall

Ma Bourgogne - la terrasse en hiver

Ma Bourgogne
the terrace in winter

In the frigid temperatures of December,
this is how you enjoy the terrace at Ma Bourgogne

The heaters are quite toasty
and the regular waiters greet you with a smile.

Place des Vosges - les ombres

Place des Vosges

Designed and built in a perfect square over 400 years ago,
the arcades frame the inner courtyard/park.
The inauguration of this open air square in 1612
was witness to the celebration of royals in a double wedding:
King Louis XIII to Anne of Austria and of his sister Elizabeth to Philip IV of Spain.

The brick and stone design is typically seventeenth century French
and has been attributed to Louis or Clement Métezauh
or Jacques Androuet de Cerceau.

It is amazing that these buildings survived turbulent times relatively intact.
However, the bronze statue of Louis XIII was melted down by the Revolutionaries
and replaced two centuries later.

Une cour privée

A private courtyard

One never knows when a door will be left open...
Virginia (Paris Through My Lens), Peter (Peter's Paris),
Alexa (Paris Encore), and I snapped away
and soaked up this gorgeous courtyard off Place des Vosges.

Then, we were discovered and left quickly...

Place des Vosges - Ma Bourgogne

Ma Bourgogne

No matter the season or the weather, this bistrot in the heart of Place des Vosges attracts both the locals and the tourists.  I remember years ago having to choose whether to eat or to drink as we were short of cash and they did not take credit cards.

We chose the "house red."

Dominique Bart - artiste-peintre

2010 June 17-18 DSC_0673

Dominique Bart
Artist

Si vous passez Place des Vosges à Paris,
vous rencontrerez certainement sous les arcades au n° 13
Dominique Bart. Artiste-peintre,
il vous montrera ses aquarelles et ses huiles représentant cette superbe place.

I have had this photo for a few years of M. Bart, but did not know his name.  Mon amie Marie found him and bought one of his beautiful watercolors.  He allowed me to take his photo, and Marie shared his name.  I have not seen him on recent visits to Place des Vosges, but would love to give him a copy of this portrait.  Perhaps I will find him on my next trip.

Rue de Birague - Marais

Rue de Birague
One of the entry streets to Place des Vosges

Peering in the window to get a look beyond the street view,
one finds a collection of old and new, natural and fabricated...
eclectically pleasing to the eye.

Place des Vosges

Place des Vosges

The angles and patterns seen in this 400 year old square reflect the old and the new.  The lines of green superimposed on the curves of the lampposts and the never-ending archways are pleasing to the eye.

The four rows of houses forming the square were all built to the same design.  On a sunless day it is possible to enter the park and then lose your sense of direction.  Well, perhaps with dark clouds rolling in from the west, you will get your bearings again.

Ma Bourgogne - un verre de vin

Ma Bourgogne is a favorite spot of ma chere amie, Virginia of Paris Through My Lens, so this post is for her. Last June we met there with Virginia and her friend Mary, Marie, and Richard of Eye Prefer Paris. We enjoyed the early summer evening among friends, old and new. In December, Holly, John and I reinacted the scene (in coats)!

I can't wait to be back!

Un Valentin pour Vous!

Just across from Ma Bourgogne at Place des Vosges, was a gallery of eclectic art. This colorful heart of hearts by David Kracov seems just the perfect valentine from me to you*. His wall sculpture of enamel on metal is entitled "Look within your Heart"

No chocolate (tant pis), but a pretty nice valentine!

*or as we might say in the South ... "the perfect valentine from me to all y'all!"
