Fête de la Musique - Place de Furstenberg

Fête de la Musique 2010
The guitarist

Perhaps one of thousands of musicians,
the solo guitarist performed in the late afternoon in Place de Furstenberg,
only steps from Eugène Delacroix' apartment (1857).

Virginia, Marie and I encountered this guitarist in the quiet street
and gave him our full attention.
He willingly agreed to our photo shoot.

Église Notre Dame de Lorette

There has been much said about the gaudy interior of Notre Dame de Lorette, but I found it elegant, adorned with 19th Century art and a Cavaille-Col grand organ.
The painter Eugene Delacroix lived nearby and was christened here in 1840.

The other stories of this large church refer to the "kept women" of the surrounding neighborhood.  Many wealthy men of this period had mistresses as well as wives and it is said that all attended Sunday services.

Interesting, n'est-ce pas?
That little fact was not included in the church literature I picked up in November.

How did I miss this?

It was not until I posted the Sunday church, Saint Denys du Saint Sacrement, and I was looking for information on Eugène Delacroix that I realized the Musée national Eugène Delacroix was in the same block as my hotel!

I even stopped to photograph the beautiful building, l'Institut Catholique de Paris on Rue de l'Abbaye, from the little shaded Place Furstenberg. We walked past the entrance to the museum tucked away in the corner which would have just been over my right shoulder as I snapped this photo.

Most days as we walked through Place Furstenberg, there were people playing music or just sitting with friends. There was much activity for La Fête de la Musique en juin.

Église Saint Paul Saint Louis -- organ pipes

This 17th century church in the Marais has a beautiful interior with a dome that rises 180 feet (55 m.) above the crossings. If you visit be sure to note the Delacroix painting and the interior of the dome which is sky blue.

I love church organs and the creative woodwork in which the pipes are housed. You can almost hear the music.....
