It might be a little of both. I didnt actually sit at one of these cafe's during happy hour. I did sit ..but didnt mind paying full price. I really must start getting bolder and take more photos of the Parisians. I do believe he is posing! x
These terraces are so wonderful to sit around. You can even "pretend" you are waiting for someone, or you can dream that something unexpected, even romantic, might happen.. Oh Paris!
I love the way you've caught the wavy chalk line on the shop front so it looks like it's smoke rising from his cigarette.
Either he's trying a little too hard to look cool or he's just grumpy because he has to sit outside to smoke while all his friends are inside having fun without him.
Most definitely looking cool. When I was in Paris several years ago, I sat at a cafe table outside and watched people. I could have sat their all day and never gotten tired of watching people pass.
I love this photo!
Check my blog. You are the winner of the Burlap hand stenciled drawstring bag filled with Lavender scented pinecones. YAY!
I would make a perfect poster for a movie! "le Ricaux" could be the name or surname of this man, the guy is so "not natural", he could work for the mafia or something like that.(i mean, in the movie, of course!)
Oh, yes! Definitely looking cool! Makes me want to ask questions about him!! Could be a clip from a movie! I love it! You do get some of the best "people" shots, Genie!! And Paris is definitely the place to find them!! Enjoy your evening, mon amie!
I was also thinking "a bit of both." But have to agree with those who say the cig is so NOT cool. My, haven't things changed since I was young? Do love this thought-provoking shot, though, Genie!
Well, it certainly wasn't regular business hours when we went by --- so he either got stood up by a friend or was waiting for a very tardy one ... There wasn't much of anyone on the streets to look cool for ... except Genie and me and we weren't very interested in cool people (just cool photos) :-). It is a nice jacket and the smoke is absolutely fine!
Richard said it best... "the look" of the beard, the sunglasses (to hide the watchful eyes), his tennis shoes (please tell me he is not an American!), the glass of water to wash away the smell of coffee breath when he goes to kiss her..." (Merci, Richard!)
The cig is part of the look but not as cool as it used to be in Paris (and beyond).
dive, you get the "observant" prize for noticing the "chalk line" of smoke which appears to be coming from his cigarette.
Marie is right... this was taken mid-morning so it is NOT happy hour and there were not that many people about, but he was getting ready, practicing his "cool" persona for the later crowds.
It's a great picture but the title you gave it makes it just that much more enjoyable. Modern day version of that famous Degas painting...you know the one I mean...
Maybe he´s looking for a friend, but he´s indeed looking VERY cool! Love his jacket.
ReplyDeleteNon non non. Not with le fag dangling .. very uncool.
ReplyDeleteIt might be a little of both.

ReplyDeleteI'm too distracted by the wonderful facade and chairs. Another beauty, Genie!
ReplyDeleteStanding room only at my "Happy Hours" in Paris!

I'm not so sure if he is cool, but your photo is ULTRA cool!! Great that it is blk/wht!
ReplyDeleteeither way this image is 'looking good'. great shot, genie.
ReplyDeleteLe monsieur-qui-fume looks a bit like Ringo Star, doesn't he? Maybe he knows it ;-) Veronique aka French Girl in Seattle
ReplyDeletePerhaps he's just looking! Nice shot Genie..
ReplyDeleteJust alone with his thoughts, I wager.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Dive on this one. Great shot w ith the faux smoke.
ReplyDeleteV
Probably waiting for both...
ReplyDeleteAnd here I thought all this time James Dean was dead. The rumors were false, apparently, because he's living in Paris. Very cool picture!
ReplyDeleteGreat photo in b&w.
ReplyDeleteI was going to say what Dive did. He is cool, though.

He's not bad, lose the ciggie and he'd be a 'bit of alright' as they say in UK, but it is certainly a very cool image Genie, the B&W is parfaire!!
ReplyDeleteApparently, he is one of those people that think a cigarette hanging out of his mouth makes him ultra-cool. Some will never learn.
ReplyDeleteHe could be multitasking. ;-)

ReplyDeleteIndeed, he thinks he is cool~the cigarette gives him away! Love the shot!
ReplyDeleteEither way it's a very cool shot Genie!
ReplyDeleteAre you sure he was a 'gentleman'? How unFrench to be wearing snekers! Or?
ReplyDeleteI think he's waiting for Paul McCartney! He looks a little like Ringo.
