Hôtel du Nord - le dimanche



What an extraordinary spot for a Sunday afternoon with friends. Marie and I joined Janeen for a leisurely déjeuner in April after a busy morning in the markets. Hôtel du Nord is situated on the bank of Canal St. Martin and has a history to match the ambiance with its black and white tiled floors, zinc bar, and rich wood. With its welcoming service and reasonably-priced tasty French cuisine, I could be a regular here.

    Looks real casual nothing fancy...
    but with history and tasty food,
    I'm all for it. Plus the people in that pic are obviously having a great time, a place to spend good times and good food with friends.

    Is that one of the places the artists used to hang out in the 30's Genie? Looks pretty cool. You can just imagine how excited everyone in Australia is today, Cadel is a hero!!

    Yesterday I received a request from a friend who lives in Atlanta and who is traveling to Paris in Sept for the first time. I gave her your blog and told her she would find all the info she could dream of right there.. this is a perfect example.

    I love their cool website. I've never been in there, though I've sure walked past enough times. Next time, perhaps, followed by a lovely walk along the canal.

    As Bergson said it.; "Atmosphere, atmosphere", is the most famous quote, pronounced by the famous french actress Arletty , in the movie "Hotel du Nord"(made in the 40ies, i think..)So, the choice of B&W matches very well!

    LOVE this place and if Janeen had not taken us there for dinner, would never have gone. The outside during the day gives a different impression. At night it's slightly upscale and we felt more like "locals", and a little HIP! HA

    At last a place to recommend to friends. Can't wait to sit right there with Mary and Janeen next janvier.

    There is something about the black and white that makes it seem a bit retro. A good find. By now you must have a long list of "local" places where you fit in like a native.

    Great capture. The black & white treatment ant the old style font in the signage give the scene a real 1940's/5o's feel.
