I have used their archives but have never been able to attend a performance in this house. The acoustics must be magnificent. I liked to imagine the horse-drawn carriages transporting the finest of Paris to the evening's entertainment, pulling up the ramp to drop them off at the entry, one floor above street level. The lights you photographed on the marble stairs are so deliciously delicate.
You can have the new opera house (except for the fact that you can actually see an opera there, of course!)—I'll take the Garnier any day. What a wonderful find (and photo) this is, Genie!
How interesting! What are they made from? For the life of me I can't figure it out. It almost looks like a material or paper skirt in which a light is placed inside.
Genie, le sigh, aaaahhhh ... What delightfully delicate lumieres. And what creativity! Thank you for sharing such a unique photo. It just made my hectic morning mellow! (Hoping they are still there in April) Bises, M
I've been here but have not seen these. I wonder if they're new. This is a lovely picture and these dancers lend a mysterious elegance. I love the way you captured them.
Evan -- I have the same romantic view of this opera house as you... I am hoping to attend a performance here, for the music and to see the theatre ceiling... Merci, mon ami!
Vreni -- I thought about one but it would be almost impossible to fly it home to the US... tant pis pour moi
Helen -- Merci, mon amie!
Léia -- And I will continue to look for these special things... promise!
Richard -- Merci, mon ami... je les adore
Suzi -- Check online to see your choices for the time you are there... just make sure that you are looking at Garnier and not Bastille (if you want to be here)
Shell -- Merci, dear friend... They almost looked like they were dancing and all different
biebkriebels -- I do not think that there were any duplicates among these dancers, merci
Alexa -- I am with you on that... I am sure that Bastille would have some wonderful performances but do they have a phantom???
Brittany -- I think that the bodies are paper maché and the skirts are fine, natural paper... They were not white but more of a natural color. You can see another one on my post on Dec 15 2010.
Elizabeth -- Merci, and so glad that you stopped by!
Marie -- The music in the background was delightful adding to the euphoric feeling... merci!
José -- Merci, mon ami... I am so glad that they had arranged themselves so well on the marble steps
Lala -- You know this place well and I wish that you had been there with us to open special doors, wink
AA -- I think that I made little noises when I saw these fairy creatures
Malyss -- So glad that you like these... merci
Virginia -- Merci, V
Carol -- You should put this on your list of places to go...
Cynthia -- No, but they are for sale
Halcyon -- Well, I just "followed" you on your travel blog as I do not want to miss your beautiful posts... left you a comment there... Merci!
Pam -- I am glad that you like this... start a list for your "bucket"
Rob and Mandy -- I had to look them up to be sure but I have seen videos of them and can see the resemblance... Merci!
vicki -- Merci, and glad to see you
Loree -- Merci, mon amie
Kate -- Evan is a great photographer and has a good handle on the atmosphere (and the F-stop - hah!)
James -- Merci, between us we could find much to shoot in Paris for sure!
Lucy -- Merci, mon p'tit chat... I think that they were there for the holidays but I will check on my next visit
They are very cute, Genie, but I gotta tell you that I have no idea what I am seeing . . . how big they are, where they are (I originally though they were on stairs, but not after clicking it big), etc. I guess it will just have to be one of the mysteries of life.
Jack -- You can see the relative size on my Dec 15, 2010 post as there is one in that window photo... They are on marble steps and are about 12 to 14 inches (est)... I have another photo to post that shows a photographer in action getting these lovelies... Merci
what a lovely way to light your way to your seat at the ballet!!! I went to the ballet there on my thirtieth birthday!!! I went with friends that I met at the youth hostel (I was traveling alone in Europe at the time) and finished the evening on the Left Bank...(we walked through the red light district, unbeknownst to us until we saw the "ladies" standing in the doorways, paying more attention to the guy we were with than anyone else!) The memory is getting fuzzy, but I do remember the grandeur of the l'opera house!!! Gorgeous!!!
a kiss -- Merci, and I love that design as well... your blog is nice as well, mon ami
Jack -- It is hard to give perspective when I post only one photo (usually)
Chieftess -- Oh, how I would have loved to have gone there on my 30th b-day... What an adventure you had and memories like that may slightly fade but they never leave us... merci!
Starman -- Merci, mon ami
Randy -- There must have been 20 of them on the steps
weekend -- Please visit me often... j'aime bien tes commentaires... Merci
