this is one that I come back to time and again...

for the trees,

and the players in this familiar scene.

 This church with first construction in 1642 is an active parish with many events.  Although much of the church was dark, the nativity scene had been well-attended and flooded in light.


This is the same church where Peter, David and I saw the donkey on Palm Sunday in April.

Although the works of art, the chapels, the marble altar, a great organ, and architecture of four centuries are well-documented, it is this quiet corner at the rear of the church which caught my attention.

Candles and camels, angels and cherubs, 

all surround the manger, completed by a "star in the east."

Église Saint Roch - Nativity II

In December, Holly and I stayed at Janeen's apartment as you may remember and Église Saint Roch was directly across the narrow street from our large windows. In April when I returned to Janeen's apartment, Marie and I attended an evening Palm Sunday service. You may recall the view of the altar from my previous post shown below. Just before the evening service we had the opportunity to photograph the Nativity from a different angle. This marble sculpture of Michel Anguier dates from 1665.*

Only by getting this close can one appreciate the fine details and that small delicate hand reaching upward.
