I am always amazed at the detailed stone work. These men were artists and their work is there for many generations to enjoy, yet we do not know their names. It's sad that their names are not recognized like other famous artists. Your blogging sister, Connie :)
Connie, you will be pleased to know that many of the buildings do have the architects' names carved into the stone. This one did not but I always look for it.
Jane and Lance, with this lion, you could actually see his full mouth and tongue. His partner on the other side of the door was equally hungry and imposing.
Vagabonde, I agree, and my parents have a photo of me sitting on one of the lions in front of the NYC Public Library.
Il m'arrive souvent de marcher le nez en l'air. Même à Lausanne, il y a des choses intéressantes.
Un jour je marchais, justement le nez en l'air, à Vienne dans une période de Noël. Je découvrais les magnifiques enseignes en fer forgé et vlan, je m'étale dans une gouille ( une mare ), d'eau sale. Le soir, j'avais prévu d'aller à la messe de minuit écouter les fameux petits chanteurs.Mon blouson était souillé et la manche nettoyée, n'aurait pas eu le temps de sécher d'ici minuit. Le jeune concierge de l'hôtel, voyant ma mine déconfite, me propose une veste... d'ado... où j'aurais eu l'air d'être un petit moineau tombé du nid. Je suis restée dans ma chambre, avec un bouquin, un yaourt, une orange et d'autre bricoles en guise de *Joyeux Noël *. Cela ne m'a pas turlupiné le moins du monde !

I like sculptures of lions. I took photos of some while in Venice too. I think heads of lions are often seen on buildings in various cities.
