We visited here in April of 2011 on a sunny day and the warm light shinning through the glass reflected rainbows of color on the tombs. There is a nice garden area along one side and a wide plaza leading up to the cathedral after the short walk out of the Metro. This picture captures the radiant color found inside on sunny days. A very nice Sunday picture!
Richard, you can look back on my posts for Basilique Saint Denis as there is one with all the rainbows of those majestic windows. Merci!
This basilica has been well cared for over the centuries and as you can see from this photo as well as my other posts that the interior is light and on sunny days there is indeed a golden glow.
Shell, I had not noticed, but agree that there is an Escher-esque look about it with the intertwined columns and arches.
Merisi, there are many tombs and statues in this basilica, the resting place of kings and queens.
It is sad that buildings such as this are no longer created, and those that are standing cost greatly to maintain and restore.
I almost posted the ceiling today myself. I saw what looked like bricks and was blown away. Weren't we fortunate to see this beautiful place of worship. V

Such silent beauty but even in pictures I can hear the singing. You've captured a mellow glow.
And then in summer, the benefits of a nice and fresh shade! :-)
Thank you for sharing your visual prize with us.
Wonderful light here, and what an atmosphere.. Imagine people from the middle-age, in front of such places, how not to feel the magic?!
Love the perspective and all these arches!
God bless you!

Great photo!! Why don't they make buildings like that anymore?
The soft golden lighting shows to perfection the beauty of the ancient stone artistry. Lovely image Genie!
Bon dimanche,
Ruby
Great architecture, the "statue at rest" is interesting!

There's a touch of Escher about this, Genie. And the light is lovely. Bon weekend... x

What gorgeous photo, Genie! Thanks for sharing it.
So much to see here in just this one shot! Wonderful.
Beautiful. The lines, angles, curves, textures and subtle color changes all contribute to making this an awe-inspiring place.
A beautiful shot! Love the columns and the vaulted ceilings...the lighting too!!!
What a gorgeous composition! Hope you've had a very bon dimanche, ma chère.
