Église Saint-Antoine des Quinze-Vingts

Église Saint-Antoine des Quinze-Vingts

If you enter a church in Paris and do not immediately see
the organ, look above the main door.

This is a beautiful Cavaillé-Coll organ
and you can click here to hear the music of this organ
as played by reknown organist, Eric Lebrun.

Église Saint-Antoine-des-Quinze-Vingts

Église Saint-Antoine-des-Quinze-Vingts
the primary organ

This great organ comes from the instrument built
by the renown Aristide Cavaille-Coll in 1894 for the mansion of Baron Espée.
It was moved from the Baron's residence on
Avenue Bois de Boulogne to Saint-Antoine in 1909.

Like many churches, there is a second organ,
a practice organ for the choir, which I will show you another time.

Église Saint-Antoine-des Quinze-Vingts

Église Saint-Antoine-des Quinze-Vingts

Although it is not as majestic
as many of the well-known churches in Paris,
this is an active parish in the 12é
with some lovely details and a great organ
by Aristide Cavaille-Coll.

Église Notre Dame des Champs

Église Notre Dame des Champs

We sat and listened intently to the organ
as the music filled every corner of the immense space.
It was a rehearsal by Yannick Merlin,
and we watched as he and his assistant
descended the narrow spiral stairs behind the latticed enclosure,
seen at the back of the church (under the arches).

The organ was built by Cavaillé-Coll in 1877,
just as the roman styled church was completed (a ten-year venture).

Église Notre Dame de Lorette - l'orgue

Église Notre Dame de Lorette

Église Notre Dame de Lorette is a neoclassical church
built by architect Louis-Hippolyte Lebas
between 1823 and 1836 in the 9th arrondissement.

It contains the first organ built by the great organ builder
Aristide Cavaillé-Coll (1811–1899).
Composer Cesar Franck became the assistant organist here in 1947
and was married in this church as well.

For another view of the interior and an interesting story,

Église Notre-Dame-des-Champs - l'orgue

Église Notre-Dame-des-Champs

The organ is Cavaillé-Coll from 1877,
and on this dreary, rainy day Yannick Merlin
was rehearsing for a concert.

If you want to have a sample of the sounds and a video of the church,

Église Notre Dame de Lorette II

Rich colors adorn every corner of this large church, much like a museum.

I would like to return for a concert on the Cavaille-Coll organ,
and to see if there are any mistresses in attendance.

Église Notre Dame de Lorette

There has been much said about the gaudy interior of Notre Dame de Lorette, but I found it elegant, adorned with 19th Century art and a Cavaille-Col grand organ.
The painter Eugene Delacroix lived nearby and was christened here in 1840.

The other stories of this large church refer to the "kept women" of the surrounding neighborhood.  Many wealthy men of this period had mistresses as well as wives and it is said that all attended Sunday services.

Interesting, n'est-ce pas?
That little fact was not included in the church literature I picked up in November.

Église Saint-Roch - Two organs

The chancel (choir) organ of Église Saint-Roch is the creation of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, widely considered to be the greatest organ builder of the 19th century. His many innovations and inventions produced the "symphonic organ" which permitted an organ to sound like the individual instruments in a symphony or to be played simultaneously.

There are two organs in Saint-Roch. The chancel organ above is dated 1845 and the grand gallery organ (seen below) has an interesting history. One could say that it was created and re-created over a 90 year period beginning in 1751 (Lesclop), 1770 (Clicquot), and Cavaillé-Coll in 1840. It has remained in a constant state of improvements up to the current time.

My blog-friend Evan Kreider has produced a masterful post, full of photos of this magnificent church and once you have seen this you will understand why I will be posting another church next Sunday. (a smile, a wink, and a "great job" to Evan)

The site of many burials, Nathalie of Avignon-in-Photos told me that the beloved French actress Annie Girardot was memorialized at a funeral here at Église Raint-Roch just weeks ago (on March 5th).
