Église Saint-Louis en l'Île

Église Saint-Louis en l'Île

It was first a parish chapel.
In 1642 Louis XIV decided to build a larger church
based on plans prepared by François Le Vau,
and  it was dedicated to St. Louis.
The organ is magnificent and I will show it in a future post.

This Jesuit-styled church is considered to be
a perfect example of 17th century French Baroque.

  1. Hello Genie,

The soaring magnitude of this building is wonderful. It must be so uplifting to be inside this marvellous space. Perfectly lovely.

Hoping that you are enjoying a happy and restful weekend.

Thank you for your warmly welcoming comment. It is good to be back!

  2. Made me go back and reread a little biographical info on ol' Louis. Interesting how he was apparently able to maintain a regular devotional life even as he was transforming himself into the "Sun King". :-)

  4. Stunning!!! I love the way the light is coming through that magnificent stained glass window and all the gold touches reflecting the natural and lamp light, as well. Bon dimanche et merci Louis :)

  6. One of my favorite Parisian churches, but I have never seen it in this lighting -- only the colder light of day. Beautiful photo, Genie.

  7. First time I entered this church (so unprepossessing from the outside), I was stunned to find this magnificent interior. Well captured, Genie!

  11. «Louis» is delighted to see that you linked this with the inSPIREd Sunday meme. He knows this church as he lived just across the Seine from it. Echoing what Alexa wrote, one would never guess from the exterior what a gem this church is.
