Vertical sundial
Paris is full of sundials, horizontal and vertical,
and many like this on in Montmartre are incorporated into the original architecture.
There is a book on this subject,
in French and out of print, but I am still searching.

Hello Genie:
ReplyDeleteTempus fugit! Alas. But here it does so with great style.
I lived in Montmartre at two different addresses, but never saw this. Where is it exatly? It's beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWow.. That's an interesting find. It looks very old. I love stumbling upon such history when traveling. It would have made me stop and take a photo too.
ReplyDeleteI find it so pretty that I took the time and trouble to look it up ... et voici !
ReplyDeleteit was put there by this guy who worked for Napoleon and who lived there?
Au 4 de cette rue, le commandant Henry Lachouque – « Historien de Napoléon et de la Grande Armée, 1888-1971 » comme l'indique la plaque commémorative – a fait installer sur sa maison, un cadran solaire déclinant de l'après-midi.
Still working by saying nearly 1 hour. Of course when they made it no summertime then and the 5º east from greenwich made also a little difference but still strong.
ReplyDeleteThis one is very beautiful, I like those sundials.
ReplyDeleteGreat find! What an interesting architectural detail.
ReplyDeleteHow fascinating! I haven't heard of vertical sundials before.
ReplyDeleteI love this image! :) The le coq is striking on this sundial!
ReplyDeleteQuel jeu de mots ! Bien vu...
ReplyDeleteThe French certainly do love their clocks....in whatever form.
ReplyDeleteThat's very cool.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised by Belgium's research about this being original. I thought it might be a modern sundial trying to look old. Why would an old one have a backward N in the first word but correctly-facing Ns everywhere else?
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful find, Genie. Thanks to your post I'll be more attentive to these when I return to Paris in Sept.
