Where is this?
Unless you have been in this very spot you may not guess, but this is from the platform of a Metro station. One generally thinks of Metro stations beneath ground but this is from the very large Bastille and this is a raised platform open to the water below, the Bassin de l'Arsenal or Canal St. Martin. Last year I bought a book about the Metro in Paris and it has almost more than you ever wanted to know. It makes for good reading in and is a wonderful reference but I do wish that there was a picture-book of all the Metro stations inside and out.
Terrific capture, Genie! I love it! Hope you have a wonderful weekend, mon amie!

I knew it straight away, Genie! Do I win a prize?!?!? Thanks for the lovely shot and the chuckle as well!
ReplyDeleteGreat capture from where you were standing. such a surreal setting. You must be having a blast over there.
ReplyDeleteCool shot! The black and white and vignetting looks great! Sounds like a neat Metro station!
ReplyDeleteJ'aime cet endroit...

Yes, I agree, a book with pictures of the Paris Metro stations would be wonderful! I was impressed with all the ones I used when I visited there.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a project for you Genie, gorgeous pictures of all the metro's in Paris, wouldn't that be fun! Love the effect you've used on this picture, has got that sort of 'aged' look. Hope you're having a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteWell, since there is a river in Paris, there are boats. And one needs to be able to get from one's boat to the Métro at some point. All very logical, Genie.
ReplyDeleteGood picture and explanation, Genie. Thanks.
Next time you come to France, buy a book called "Metronome", by Lorent Deutsch. You'll find plenty of interessing stories about the metro, and some pictures.
ReplyDeleteThe Bassin looks so different in black and white!
ReplyDeleteAll this reminds me that my "Where Is It Wednesday?" misses you! It'll start up again in September, just so you know. ;-)
ReplyDeleteWow! It looks so different in B&W! I looked at my photo and almost couldn't believe it is the same place. Beautiful shot.
ReplyDeleteI loved strolling along that area! Great photo.
ReplyDeleteI think that Perth's suggestion is a good one for a time-consuming project for you. Perhaps writing off the expenses as well. I have read several essays and a book on the boat people of Paris...fascinating, esp. those families who make a living there by transporting goods as contrasted by the leisure boaters or more affluent houseboaters. Love the photo!
ReplyDeleteBeautifully captured!
ReplyDeleteI like it.

Thanks for visiting my blog. I know what you mean about Paris reaching out and grabbing you. I spent every summer vacation in my twenties there. It's been a very long time since I've visited, so I thoroughly enjoyed your pictures and commentary. I look forward to more.
ReplyDeleteHow interesting. I never would have guessed.
ReplyDeleteIT's nice to see at night as well!

Hey why don't we do that picture book? The title can be, "Virginia, Lost in Metro Land!"

I love boats, but I guess there's not much privacy there!
ReplyDeleteYes, funny those stations above the ground. Suddenly you see bright daylight.
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to take the midnight tour or whatever they call it, where you ride the metro after closing.....wooooo.....spooky. I think they serve you champagne, too.
ReplyDeleteEverything about Paris so romantic. I would love to experience traveling one of the rivers.
ReplyDeleteI knew it as well—and I know a book project when I see one too!
ReplyDeletehee hee.... This was «Louis'» guess as to the location...
ReplyDelete;-D
Why think small? Instead of a book of every Metro station, how about a book of every street? That would keep you in Paris longer. Interesting effect you got here.
ReplyDeleteSo ... what are you waiting for?
ReplyDeleteOooh, I knew it too! Only because we were right there a year ago.
ReplyDeleteLovely b&w.
