Unless you have been in this very spot you may not guess, but this is from the platform of a Metro station. One generally thinks of Metro stations beneath ground but this is from the very large Bastille and this is a raised platform open to the water below, the Bassin de l'Arsenal or Canal St. Martin.
Last year I bought a book about the Metro in Paris and it has almost more than you ever wanted to know. It makes for good reading in and is a wonderful reference but I do wish that there was a picture-book of all the Metro stations inside and out.

Yes, I agree, a book with pictures of the Paris Metro stations would be wonderful! I was impressed with all the ones I used when I visited there.

Well, since there is a river in Paris, there are boats. And one needs to be able to get from one's boat to the Métro at some point. All very logical, Genie.

Next time you come to France, buy a book called "Metronome", by Lorent Deutsch. You'll find plenty of interessing stories about the metro, and some pictures.

I think that Perth's suggestion is a good one for a time-consuming project for you. Perhaps writing off the expenses as well. I have read several essays and a book on the boat people of Paris...fascinating, esp. those families who make a living there by transporting goods as contrasted by the leisure boaters or more affluent houseboaters. Love the photo!

Yes, funny those stations above the ground. Suddenly you see bright daylight.
I have always wanted to take the midnight tour or whatever they call it, where you ride the metro after closing.....wooooo.....spooky. I think they serve you champagne, too.
Everything about Paris so romantic. I would love to experience traveling one of the rivers.
