Musée Marmottan - La Cour


Originally built as a hunting lodge at the edge of Bois de Boulogne, this museum is filled with over 300 impressionist paintings and the largest collection of Monet's works in the world. This is the cloistered courtyard and I will bring you back here again with photos and stories.

You may know of the controversy and dispute that stirred regarding the loan of Monet works from Marmottan for the Grand Palais exhibit last fall (2010). It seems that the magnificent Palais all but demanded the use of Monet paintings (all of the significant ones) which request was subsequently denied by the Marmottan. So, those who had to wait in long lines for the highly publicized exhibit might have enjoyed an afternoon at Marmottan. Tant pis pour eux...

    Monet matches very well with spring!And I prefer this place than Grand Palais.

    Interesting information! A couple of years ago there was a splendid Monet exhibition in Edinburgh......who knows what goes on behind the scenes !!!

    I visited the exhibit in January but I've never been in the courtyard. Funny to think it was a hunting lodge once before.

    This is a gem of a museum. The paintings by Berthe Morisot are also another reason to visit.

    I think this is going to have to be visited on this next trip --- I want to OD on impressionist paintings and this setting just sweetens the pot!!

    Such a pleasant shot of a charming courtyard...

    It's been over 30 years since I spent time in museums in Paris...at the time, the Je de Paume (sp?) was the go to impressionist museum...does it still exist or has this one taken it's place???

    (yes, it's sad but true, 30+ years!...our last time in Paris was only a few hours and we chose to visit Notre Dame, exterior of the Louvre, La Tour and all in between!!! Besides...we were there on a Tues and all the museums were closed!!!)

    If one was clever enough to buy their tickets at FNAC, one would just walk past the long lines and go right in, as we did.

    I would love to visit this place, I like looking at art I visited a Degas exhibition in Edinburgh it was so good.

    I would love to see their collection. I like the rounded part of this building. I'll bet the interior is just beautiful!

    I'm glad you and others found and find this place. I guess that the dispute about the Grand Palais exhibition gave them quite some publicity! As you know, this is also where the painting which gave its name to impressionism is to be found.

    To all -- Holly and I were there on a rainy day and loved the leisurely time spent among the impressionists (many artists). The building itself is a treasure with some interesting architectural features I will show another time.

    I do not think that you could go into the courtyard but I was able to take this shot from a window at the far end of the maison. As much as I love the grandeur of a large setting, there is something special about the feel of this small museum.

    The museum and the area are worth a visit.

    The Musée Marmottan is one of my favourte museums in Paris! J´adore Monet!! Of course I was at the big exhibition at the Grand Palais, it was really worth the visit. I bought my tickets online, so didn´t have to wait!
