There are many street markets in Paris but on my recent trip in December we discovered one of the livliest, Marché d'Aligre... With an abundance of produce designed to sell, there is much noise as the vendors hawk their goods, shouting in various languages about their quality all while slicing specimens of fruit with grand flourishes!
The colors were exquisite and the people-watching would have been worth buying a ticket. No billet necessary! I have many more photos to show in the weeks ahead.
Marché d'Aligre
Rue d'Aligre et Rue Beccaria
It sure is the liviest! And they say it's also one of the cheapest! Your photo is very lively !!
ReplyDeleteOh, I know the Marché d´Aligre very well! Last July I stayed in an apartment near this street market.
ReplyDeleteBeen there and it is great!!
ReplyDeleteHe has such a beautiful strong face - these are the real characters who make up Paris today.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if he is born there or a recent arrival - whichever, he is representative of the breadth of cultures in this wonderful city!
hugs
Shane
«Louis» didn't know about this market. It's now on the must-see list for the next visit to Paris...
Those fresh herbs look plush and beautiful!
ReplyDeleteGreat shot! It captures the chaos and joy of finding produce in a market.
ReplyDeleteFascinating!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it great that a city as cosmopolitan as Paris has so many traditional 'markets' all over town.
ReplyDeleteGenie, I'll take a bunch of mint and a bunch of flat-leaf parsley please.
ReplyDeleteLovely photo (as always) - full of colour and life.
I'm enjoying your pictures from this marketing!
ReplyDeleteCool!
Léia
Great candid photo -- love the arched eyebrows ... makes me wonder what he's thinking. The colors are crisp and fresh just like the herbs.
ReplyDeleteo2 -- We did notice the prices as being less than some of the other markets... merci, I like lively!
ReplyDeleteVreni -- There is so much to see in that area and it would be fun to be nearby... It has a definite neighborhood feel to it
Bibi -- Merci
Shane -- He has a kind face and with all of the activity, it was not too difficult to capture some candid profiles
Louis -- I have been someplace that you have not? Definitely put it on your list just for the "slice of life" feel to it.
Richard -- Merci, mon ami et je te souhaite une bonne semaine aussi.
Shell -- Fresh herbs, fruits, vegetables, cheese, honey, meats, seafood... all so very fresh
Brittany -- Ah yes, there was a healthy dose of chaos too!
Carol -- You are going to love the colors here...
Harriet -- Yes, and I love the different "flavors" of the various neighborhood markets
Helen -- Yes, I can almost smell it from here! Merci...
JM -- Merci, mon ami
Léia -- Merci, and I wish that I was there shopping for my diner tonight...
A grand candid photo, love this style - people in their element. Which section of the city is this?
ReplyDeleteRob -- Merci... It is in the 12ième arr., Métro Ledru-Rollin
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome photo! What kind of camera do you use???? Or have I asked this...and forgot? At any rate, inquiring minds want to know! (I love going to the market!)
ReplyDeleteHe had that beautiful bunch of mint (?) all ready for its photo op. Now I'm craving a real thé a la menthe, in a glass and filled with mint leaves. Very nicely captured, Genie!
ReplyDeleteThere's always so much to see in markets! very pleasant places!
ReplyDeletenicely captured portrait
ReplyDeleteDid I ever tell you how much I love markets? And this one seems particularly interesting. Keep those photos coming.
ReplyDeleteOH this is a terrific portrait Genie. J'adore Paris markets. Don't know the street. You'll have to fill me in.

i really like the expression u capture of this man. the market must be a great place to observe the locals day to day life :)
ReplyDeleteColourful indeed - I can even smell the mint - I love Le marche de Paris
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great place to people watch!
ReplyDeleteLiz
I live near there! You should see the clean-up operation afterwards!

Samantha -- I use a Nikon D70S which has been acting a bit cranky on my last two trips... I'm sure that sand and rain and the elements have nothing to do with it - hah!
ReplyDeleteAlexa -- I think that would be a perfect beverage right now... merci, mon amie!
Malyss -- This one has some of everything!
Krunal -- Merci, and I hope that you will visit again!
Loree -- It was neither raining nor snowing on this market day which made for good photo opportunities
Virginia -- Merci, and thanks for not mentioning the blur as he is waving the herbs about - hah!
fiziskandarz -- You are absolutely right and you can see all ages, all backgrounds, a little of everything...
Dianne -- The colors are so vibrant that they look artificially painted!
Liz -- Plenty of people, little people in strollers, people with canes, and pets
Rob -- I think that the website even shows a photo of the clean-up operation... Very neat location to live in Paris!
i didn't know sean connery was selling produce in paris! ;-)
ReplyDeleteAmanda -- Tu as raison! I knew that he looked familiar and you have put the name on him! Merci, mon amie!
ReplyDeleteMy Farmer's Market does not open till May 1st. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
ReplyDeleteSteven -- I am so sad for you (and me also)... In Paris they are open year-round with more root vegetables offered in the winter... Hang on, May will eventually be here!
ReplyDeleteGreat shot and I'll bet the mint made the air smell wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI love spontaneous market photos. Some of my favorite photos on trips are taken of the vendors. In fact, until about three weeks ago I used one of them as my desktop background photo. (Maybe it helped that it was a pretty woman with a big smile . . . )
ReplyDeleteJack -- Well, that would indeed make for a lovely background... If I could just be invisible with my camera I could get so many more candid shots...
ReplyDeleteI found your post good and informative. I like your article. Thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteParis Apartment
I love that market ! my first address in Paris was in the 11th and i used to go to marché d'Aligre from time to time..so lively ! thank you for the happy pic ! :-)
ReplyDeleteLala -- It is interesting that all those who live or have lived in Paris already know about this market but it seems to be less of a tourist destination... Perhaps that is why I loved it so!
