Alfred Dreyfus
In the midst of a small square (Place Pierre Lafue) on Boulevard Raspail we stopped our Vélibs and took several photos of this Giacometti-style porous bronze with a pigeon on its head.
What seemed an interesting sculpture in an inauspicious location proved to have an intriguing story which played out over a century ago, the Dreyfus Affair. This sculpture was created in 1986 by Louis Mitelberg (TIM) and shows "Captain Dreyfus" with his broken sword. To read more about the story, click here.

Quite a setting for the statue.
ReplyDeleteBonjour chère amie,
ReplyDeleteUne belle prise avec la présence des pigeons sur la tête de la statue... Je ne connais pas cette placette. Elle me semble charmante.
Gros bisous
I feel like I need to get a broom and shoo that pigeon away Genie.
ReplyDeleteSuperbe place, jolie photo!
ReplyDeleteNice post!

Have a nice day!
A good reminder of a hard part of french history.
ReplyDeleteThat is the weirdest looking statue I've ever seen!
ReplyDeleteLots of history! It's a beautiful sculpture.

We are heading out to the Marais today and the weather is holding. Having found a great restaurant, we will make a return today meeting up with Peter (Peter's Paris).
ReplyDeleteWith just a little bit of luck, we will see a sunset from the rooftop terrace of Galeries Lafayette this afternoon. Keep your fingers crossed!
....more later
à bientôt

Genie, FYI or any history buffs interested: Recently read a review of a new book about the Dreyfus Affair: "An Officer and a Spy" by Robert Harris. Amazon, among others, gives it 5 stars. It has really tweaked my interest in learning the true story.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great Paris day and it did not rain a drop, contrary to the weather predictions. We had lunch at Les Bonnes Soeurs with Peter and walked through the Marais. Mid afternoon we had chocolat chaud at Le Café aux Chats surrounded by kitties of all types. I will have photos to post when I return.
ReplyDeleteWe finished the day on the rooftop of Galeries Lafayette watching the sun set behind La Tour Eiffel - stunning!
We photographed all the Printemps windows and returned to the apartment with hundreds of photos
Bises,

I love this shot! I stayed in Le Marais and loved the area so looking forward to your pics.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful sculpture.
ReplyDeleteDon't you love photos of statues with pigeons on the head? I must have taken at least a dozen over the years.
ReplyDeleteYour day sounds wonderful. It's so easy to take hundreds of photos a day in Paris isn't it? My family returned with 18,500 after our 5 week trip this year (there were three of us taking pictures).
ReplyDeleteI walked past this statue every day for 10 days as it was between my flat and where other family members were staying. I love knowing exactly where one of your photos was taken.
