Quite often the line extends from the door into the tiled courtyard to wait for a table.  The scene then resembles an alfresco cocktail party.

    My first thought: Hey, where is everyone? The scene you describe reminds me of a place in Florence, where they hand out sausages and wine while you wait (or used to anyway).
