Le Baron Rouge - Poisson d'Avril

Le Baron Rouge

There is a long line on the sidewalk for the freshly shucked oysters on Sundays at Le Baron Rouge.  Last year on April 1st, my husband, Peter (Peter's Paris), and I were there for the salty delicacies.

The French tradition for "April Fools Day" is
put a paper fish on the back of some unsuspecting person.

Do you see it?

You have two days to cut out your fish... Don't wait.

  4. Le Baron Rouge also sells wine straight from the cask. It is good wine at a very reasonable price. If you con't have your own bottle they will sell you one for 50 centimes. You should try it at least once!

  6. haha - pretty funny!

i thought of you the other day when i visited a new patisserie that opened up in my town, complete with macaron towers in the windows. the staff even put on a long evening gown glove every time they removed a macaron from a case - the effect was like removing a jewel!

  7. I was the victim of poisons d'Avril the first year I was in Paris -- after that I was the perpetrator! Love your photo, Genie --

  13. I love this tradition. When I was living in France working in a school I remember the children having so much fun in the playground.

  17. Interesting that there's an "April Fool's" day tradition in Paris too!!! I'm sure it's not called the same thing...but a similar idea!!!

  18. I have cut out my fish for a few people on Monday. They do not suspect a thing.

Jeff, I did see the casks of wine and wish that we had filled a container. A place like this with all of the locals really gives a flavor to the 12ième.

Anne and Starman, this will definitely give Peter a laugh and my husband, David, too! I was going to leave out my husband's name, but the ambiguous reference caught both of you. I was tired when I posted this. David and Peter are about the same age and we all three had a fabulous time on our outings.

Valladolid, thanks for putting a name on the tradition/day. It is interesting how different cultures and countries partake of mischief.

Amanda, I love that story, and particularly the "long evening gloves!" What a visual, and it thrills me that you were thinking of me. You will have to tell me your favorite flavors at your new place.

Alain, Marché d'Aligre is one of my favorite haunts. The ethnic flavors and sounds are a delight.

    Happy Easter to all,
    Genie

  20. I am not a fan of oysters, but my husband is. I'd love him to be in France for this event some year! Don't you just love the French - not a trick or a prank, but a paper fish!
