The seventeenth century church on the island of Saint Louis was dedicated to Saint-Louis, Louis IX, King of France. The ornate Baroque style interior is in stark contrast to the somber exterior.
Although one may imagine this organ as a centuries-old masterpiece, it has a more recent history. It was made by Aubertin in 2004 (51 stops, 69 ranks) and blends seamlessly with the surrounding periods. As with many Paris churches there are multiple organs, and I will show you the chancel organ on another Sunday post.
So, before you stop in Berthillon for an ice cream, wander east on Rue St. Louis to see this magnificent church. You will notice the high, large clock which stands out as you look down the street.
bon dimanche

Oh, this makes «Louis» wish he could quickly return to Paris! He lived near this church, on the rive droit, rue-Saint-Antoine - and, yes, he would love to visit Berthillion again!
ReplyDeleteI love church organs and this one is beautiful. I also hope it is playing when I visit the church.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice Sunday.
I agree with previous comments, would love to hear it play! I will def put in on my list for Paris next time. When we travel,my daughter has an obsession about finding a cathedral a day to light a candle. The first time she visited Paris , she was 18 mnths old and we took her to the Sacre Cour,..she kneeled down and like a little angel held her hands together in prayer..it caused quite a reaction around us, it was so adorable. When we came out, there were people waiting outside to take a picture of her, to remind them of her little pose inside.perhaps that is where it started..her need to enter daily for her little ritual.Even if it means climbing countless stairs to get there. I will surprise her with this masterpiece!

ReplyDeleteGod bless you!

I agree with Cezar and Leia --- it is wonderful that someone is still making such masterpieces! I love the trumpeting angels at the top and wonder if they are actual working pipes. How I wish I could hear it playing ... Perhaps next time ...
ReplyDeleteWhat a great photo. And a great addition to your Sunday church series.
ReplyDeleteWhat a huge organ! HUGE!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to hear these pipes!
ReplyDeleteThere are a couple of very nice restaurants on Île Saint-Louis.
ReplyDeleteMagnifique!!! Passe une belle soirée chère Genie.

What? There is something to do there besides go to Berthillon? Everytime I see one of your Sunday church photos I realise that I should just try to stop in at whichever church I happen to be passing.... They are all gorgeous.
