Église Saint Philippe du Roule

This photo is yet another view of Église Saint Philippe du Roule showing more of the detail that graces this church built between 1774 and 1784 on the site of a former hospital and chapel.  You can see the photos and links from my previous posts here, here, and here.

It sits across the street from a Métro stop of the same name and a fabulous pâtisserie.
I will even tempt you on a Sunday.

bon dimanche

  1. There is such majesty in this space. What a luxury to be still under this canopy and then duck across the street for a croissant.

  5. How fabulous. A church to tour to ponder and admire, and then to step across the road to the patisserie, again to ponder and admire.

  7. How amazing Genie, when I pulled this photo in and saw all the detail, it immediately came back to me, I remember this ceiling from when Aimee and I were there the last time and I would feel quite fine about having a pastry right now (but I won't) because I've just walked 12 kilometers, oh if only I was in Paris!!

  11. hmmm...
Curiosity about seeing this church - not to mention the pâtisserie makes «Louis» wish he could hop on BA flight 284 right now SFO-LHR, then take the Eurostar to Gare du Nord and check this out!

  13. These are amazing designs. Plenty of 'sights' to occupy the eye during services.

  21. Genie,

This is the second view I've seen "looking up". This is such a beautiful place. If I had a wish for today it would be to visit this church. The best things in life are free!

  27. As with most of the churches in Paris, it is a gradual discovery to enjoy the details. I hope that I never take this ageless beauty for granted as I do not think that they make them like this any longer.

Having read much French history and just complete David McCullough's "The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris," I am grateful that so many churches were spared during wars and modernization... that we can still sit in a church many centuries old and hear the resonance of the organ.

Thank you for your comments and for my new visitors. Tomorrow I will take you across the street for one of those pasteries.

    Bises,
    Genie
