Marché d'Aligre - le dimanche

In a busy, crowded market shoppers were buying everything from fish and seafood to fruits, nuts, and cheeses. Vegetables of bright colors were hawked competitively across the stalls.

One solitary man is buying flowers. I have more questions than answers.

  1. I've found your really interesting blog through Deborah Lawrenson's one.
It will be a pleasure to follow you around Paris.
I do write in my blog about my whereabouts too. The ones about France might interest you:

  2. We older men buy a lot of flowers, Genie. Every single one of our other attractions has long since faded and a beautiful bunch of flowers helps to distract from that fact.

  4. One of your questions must be, "Who is he buying the flowers for?" Thought-provoking photo, and those white roses...wow.

  6. How do you keep a marriage happy for years and years??? Purchase all the items on the list AND surprise her with a beautiful bouquet of flowers! That's my happy interpretation. Lovely photo and wonderful intrigue.

  7. Sometimes the most difficult questions have simple answers. What a lovely photo. I used to give roses to my girlfriends.

  9. This photo gave me goosebumps. It is so lovely, a tall, masculine man, expression obscured, but obviously a bit sedated, a gathering of delicate roses in his hand. Yes, more questions than answers. You are so sweet ~ thank you for your compliment. Ah, yes, that commute. I've been doing it for six and a half years. Usually I listen to my French tapes or silence. Have a lovely day, dear Genie ~ xox Alexandra

  12. Beautifully captured and framed. I love the contrast between this bear of a man and the gentle way in which he holds the bouquet, as well as between the stern colours of his garb and the gay tones of the flowers. Cool that the place name is contained within the shot as well.

  15. Genie,

I really have a hard time passing by flowers so beautifully displayed in galvanized buckets without wanting to buy a lovely bunch. I love the bright colors of different varieties so beautifully bundled and the French certainly know how to do that! I wonder who the lucky person is?

  18. Your ability to capture such a wonderful photo without being noticed is remarkable. You know in France the type of flower and color signifies something...if only a French person could help us out with the meaning of white roses........

  19. I too wonder who the flowers are for. It's a beautiful photo of a particular moment suspended in time.

  20. Photos such as this are like assignments in writing classes so as a writer we can draw on one's imagination. I tend to panic when the teacher says you have 15 minutes to complete this assignment and then we'll take turns reading to the group.

  21. I like flowers and my wife doesn't even notice them. So, when I buy flowers, the clerk invariably gives me a knowing smile and says something like "I am sure she will enjoy them." Hah. They are for me.

  23. I love it when I see men buying flowers and imagining who might be receiving them. I like to hope it's a serendipitous thing rather than a special occasion. There's something extra-lovely about giving flowers on a whim. It's a beautiful image, Genie.

  25. And not just any flowers...the flowers of love! He's a romantic. He's married to his sweetheart. He's taking them home to his wife for their anniversary. He's such a softie!
